I hope you're in the air as I write this down. What an opportunity.
Congratulations on getting your bike into the ruins. My buddy and I tried many times and were unable. We did find many ruins without tourists when we headed North towards the Thai border

If he went North up near the Thai border he won't get a signal. Then again there is a lot of unexploded ordnance in that area. I'm betting he is having too much fun to post.

Sharkboy is in Nam heading N. He's on a town at the 18th parallel, about 400 K south of Da Nang. That makes him about 1200 K south of Hanoi.

Thanks so much for your offer. I got waylaid by a stomach flu then moved on towards Battambang.

Yeah, and we were the bad guys too. I get it. Still it’s a great experience to see the other side.

Sorry, I’ve gotten behind in my RR. The WIFi here is crap so I can’t upload anything. But I’m back in Vietnam and headed to Hanoi before my Visa expires. There’s a lot to cover from Siem Reap to Nha Trang (where I am tonight) so stay tuned. 00FB49CB-DDA3-4ACF-8D65-2584B52F2728.jpeg

Ohh.., that worked. No excuses so lemme pour another bourbon and get going.

Angor. I bought a three day pass and spent all three days riding around. I skipped the grand daddy, Angor Wat, for a couple of reasons: crowds at the main entrance and the walking distances. I don’t walk very well. You’d think with a titanium hip I’d be fine but... anyway. I tried to sneak in the East entrance but no bueno. Some random shots from the surrounding wats. A725CDA7-02C8-4489-9F71-817C70668EF4.jpeg E30A22BD-15A9-4657-8987-BD47EF64AEC0.jpeg 311CD9FF-32D2-41DD-B93F-43D555F36ACD.jpeg 83B32B51-173E-427A-A89B-6F25E768B131.jpeg And I liked Siem Reap. Overlanders often poo poo tourists towns but as a solo traveler, they are oasis’s. There are people to talk to there! Ahh, the Blue Bus. If you guys like 60s-70s rock mixed with eclectic modern covers, seek out the Blue Bus on Mix Cloud. It’s like 70s album rock station. 53D4D2BF-147D-46C9-A39A-331452C30417.jpeg Thats not the actual Blue Bus radio program, just a bar that made me think about it.

And if you’re so inclined, I have an Instagram that I post on frequently. No travel details, just pictures with what I think are appropriate song lyrics.

From Siem Reap, I headed west then south to Battambang and checked into the Bambu Hotel. I didn’t have any expectations about Battambang, just a stopover to sleep, get an oil change and move on. The ride there from Siem Reap sucked: Road construction, dust, heat, trucks, buses. What I thought was going to be an easy ride took it out of me.

The Bambu Hotel had high marks on Agoda so I booked a night and checked in. Wow, what an oasis! Lovely rooms, amazing pool and top notch staff. There was a bar and restaurant with nightly happy hours that pulled in tourists and expats... the owner was a delightful host and... three days slipped by. 9FAE3AC0-D2F1-4B8C-B0BF-4E7DBACD1580.jpeg I stuck around more for the breakfast than the Pimms. A2ABB04D-8BE4-414B-84BE-0B884E77FE16.jpeg and I spent some time thinking about my taxes. 191DD980-6D4E-4E56-9798-1257A74252CA.jpeg And, of course, I needed an oil change before heading south. 2FFF7DF9-D183-43B7-9F76-1B25CD20CF58.jpeg With fresh oil and a full tank of gas, I headed south towards the coast of Cambodia. The owner of the Bambu said it was a beautiful ride.

After another awesome breakfast, I set out. C15A5286-EE19-4B0E-9477-25EAB99BDAC8.jpeg The riding in Cambodia, aside from around the temples, has not been great. Hot, dusty, flat terrain on roads that seem to all be under construction. So I was excited to get off the beaten path and take some less travelled roads. 38B9DBBE-A445-4512-8CC8-5CD8C7736B37.jpeg
D0819721-E6BD-4238-BEFB-62FE0AFEE9A5.jpeg It started to get a little sandy. Actually, it got a lot sandy. 3EA5D8B3-EA29-4FE4-87F1-8637ADC52918.jpeg But the XR powered through all of the deep stuff. I had plenty of moments wide open in first gear, feet unfortunately off the pegs, preying not to stall... 64E00B79-B4A8-4141-8098-0DE1DE97C2AA.jpeg and there were fires. It’s burning season in Cambodia and the fires were everywhere. Some very close to the road.

So, Google maps: I came to a fork in the road. The main road went straight and a bypass road swept westerly connecting back to the main road a long way away. I took the main road.
82607B0F-AF2F-4FA3-96A5-84990F75365E.jpeg Which quickly went to shit. E00C7476-9F7C-439C-B3CF-05EE42C2466F.jpeg But it was the main road... D3D22E24-D480-492E-A16B-CC81E714E824.jpeg when the road went to two track then single track then washed out to where there were no more scooter tracks I turned back and shamefully waved to the locals I’d passed earlier who were thinking where is he going? That burned an hour or so. Where am I? 5BD6FFEB-DB44-40EB-B8E2-39D066D55C1F.png See that yellow line? That’s not the way. The white line is the rideable route.

After a very long day where I got plenty of deep sand riding practice (yay on an XR150) I made it to the coast . When I got to my place, the only place, which I hadn’t booked in advance, they were full. 28E2FA1A-1F4D-4538-BF44-80EA5F7FEC46.jpeg But after some discussion and me drinking several of their mojitos, they offered me a tent on the beach for $4.

Looks like my plan to attend the MotoGP in Thailand has been squashed.
