OK we are a group of mostly Nigerian riders, some of us will be flying in from the US (yours truly) others from England and elsewhere. This tour has been in planning for about 6 months now and is taking off from Nigeria mid March.

The following Nigerian MCs will be taking part:

    Port Harcourt Hardridaz
    Ibadan Steel Knights
    Lagos Easy Riders
    Lagos Wheelers
    Abuja 09'ers

A core group of PHC Hardridaz - myself (Bixx - US), Inyang (PHC), Okiki (UK) and Osa (PHC); will leave PHC up to Benin, liaising with the Lagos clubs, going up to Ibadan, then Ilorin, picking up the 09-ers in Abuja, then up thru Kaduna, Sokoto, then crossing into Niger.

From Niger, to Burkina Faso, across the border into Ghana, rip down from North to South Ghana. Small detour to go up the coast to visit Sekondi Takoradi, and Cape Coast, large u-turn to do the final leg.

Final leg is Accra - Lome, Cotonou, Porto Novo to catch a nights sleep then early dawn departure to cross the Benin/Nigeria border at Seme, then on to Lagos.

In Lagos, the regional groups will hold a fete to welcome us back, rest, relax, then disperse, all in a day's work.

This post is mostly to document the trip, I expect myself and Inyang to update this page with pics etc..

We are looking to hook up with any riders in the aforementioned countries so please give us a shout if you are in our way...

Tips, hints, tricks - more than welcome.

I'm looking forward to this trip and plan on following it thru the ride reports. One day, I hope to ride from Dakar, Senegal to the beach in Kenya, staying with friends and camping out. :evil I wish I could go on this one. I've got friends in most of the towns you've got listed, but they probably aren't set up for a whole group of folks.:cry God's speed folks!

yeah we will be staying at hotels and stuff, not "free loading" except when "forced" to - LOL -- I will try and get me and the unruly crew to take a group shot at the entrance or city gates of Niamey, Ougadougou, Accra, Cotonou etc.. and post those images here as we do them... also we will be donating some stuff to a local charity hospital in Ghana ....

will post pics, air lifted my DL1000 on Sunday to Lagos, hope it clears our customs ok and I have it for the ride...

I leave for Lagos in ten days, wooo hooo!!

Internet was not readily available, so just to let you all know that the 4 MCs from Lagos, PH and Abuja all met at Abuja and we took off.

Right now we are in the northwestern-most state of Nigeria (Sokoto) and in about 1 hour (at 7am) we will be heading towards the border to cross into Niger, the plan is to spend the night at Niamey...

    Text note udpates thus far?

    trip log

    Preamble Day
Weds March 11 2009 - Lagos to PHC (got my bike out and made this run to homebase with Inyang - the good Master)

    Day 1: Saturday March 14, 2009 - PHC to Abuja (ca 300 miles/500 km)
    Day 2: Sunday March 15, 2009 - Abuja to Sokoto (ca 400 miles/640 km)
day 3: Monday March 16, 2009 - Sokoto to Niamey

    Inyang's notes:[IMG]

Picture of Log-O, myself (Bixx) and Orags at Funtua Gas Station, Katsina state, Nigeria, picture taken by Osa "King" Cookey..

    Day 2.
    Left Abuja at 0710hrs.
Fuel up at main road to Kaduna and the last 11 men riding took off for Sokoto via Kaduna, Zaria, Funtua, Gusau.
Temp is the mid 40s when you see a fcking shade and off the chart in real life.
Fuel stop at Kaduna, brunch at Zaria by 1100..
Highlight stop was rock climbing at 30 clicks to Gusau! Three bikes and 2 riders did the climb. Girls, do not try this at home!
    Sokoto at 1720.
Staying at Dankani hotel, new joint, really cool.

    Day 1.
Riders from Lagos, Ibadan and PH did the ride Abuja.
Stay at home Internet bikers not present at ride. Oops.
Met up with Oyiza, UR and Osk at Abuja.
Flyboy, foto, Fidelis already in Abuja and itching to roll.

    Keep this coming!

Quick question: what's the best way to get from Ougadougu to Timbuktu? Is there a paved road?

I'm in the early planning stages of riding Africa in 2010. (I rode from Alaska to Argentina in 2007-2008.)

    thanks!

Ok so we did it, no major accidents, no broken bones, 3500 miles over 13 days and 11 riders.

I was actually less than happy with the pace (too fast to enjoy the towns) so I went back, on my own from Port Harcourt, Nigeria on the vstrom to Accra, Ghana, spending 8 nights in Accra, and then on the way back 4 nights in Lome.

Girls are wonderful, we drank different beers like Flag and Stone, favorite hotel in Accra is SunLodge in Tesano or Ace Pitstop (also in Tesano, a suburb of Accra) and the very biker friendly Hotel Napoleon (on the Lagoon) in Lome, Togo.

One of my favorite movies is The Bucket List and I think we should all watch that movie whenever your life seems to be in a rut, and you need to reconnect with your inner hooligan, drop the high blood pressure and go on a road trip that is essentially a selfish pursuit of satisfaction, just do it.

hi Bananaman - lets work on the 2010 trip? I dont know if you prefer solo, but if not, I'd like to do it or part of it, depending on where you are going.

from experience we knew that there were good roads on all the journey, some of us had backpacked or ridden by bike or car, but i am told the michelin maps are very good, so i am gonna email my horde in nigeria to see if we can get on the ground intel on ougadougou to timbuctu, and i have some college friends who are Malian and I think now live in the capital city... I will reach out to them, u can reach me by email: william.idon@gmail.com, since my vstrom is permanented in nigeria, i can roam a little...

also the michelin map of africa is sworn too, i dont have a copy yet as i use the zumo 450 (best bang for your buck).... but I have posted the email to the nigerian bikers group and i will come back to update u when i get intel...
