Great Day to get on the bike and start the riding season. Az Mt. Thumper and I decided it was time for the annual Hot Dog Ride to the South Rim of Grand Canyon. Nice that riding to the Canyon is a day trip!

Thumper Plotted a new route that took us from Flagstaff to the rim with minimal pavement. We did manage an old section of Rt 66. With a quick stop in Parks before hitting the dirt again. Some new forest roads took us around Spring Valley and Sitgreaves Mt.

We had left Flagstaff at 8:30 am and found plenty of places with sone history to explore on the way to the Canyon. The Great Western Trail and the abandoned airport were worth stopping at.

It was time to get to the Canyon, we had been riding for about 5 hrs and some time off the pegs would be nice but Thumper somehow manages to avoid the easier routes and just teased me with graded gravel.

We finally made it seeing some elk on the way and the tame ones on the park. A brief stop to smell the mules always keeps my appetite under

She just either wants to be a mule or is desperate for someone to talk to.

Covid strikes again! The Deli at the Market Plaza where we get our jumbo dogs was closed. We had to settle for some prepackaged sandwiches and chips, but the ride was worth

We took on just a couple of view points that we’ve seen before but the Canyon never gets old and is always impressive.

It was time to head back to Flagstaff. We left the Canyon around 3 and hauled ass down the AZ BDR route. It was like a superhighway compared to some of the rocky roads we had used to get there.

The route runs through some wide open spaces then back into the cedars. Long straight sections allow for some fun and fast riding.

Thanks to the Babbitt Ranches and family for allowing access to their land so that others can enjoy it. If you ride through respect the privilege and close the gates, it’s a working ranch.

Even on the outskirts of Flagstaff there are some great roads. There was still time for FR 151 to Harts Meadow. Last time I tried this route it was winter and the road was impassable on the bike. I’m gad we threw this one in, too nice a day not to spend all day on the bike. And it was a great way to end it.

Az Thumper too Schultz Pass to his place while I took the hard road to a hot shower and meal.

It was a great start to what I hope is an incredible 2021 riding season.
