Tempting, but unfortunately I can't ride this weekend... hockey in Bakersfield Saturday, and promised to take my wife snowboarding Sunday.

Still juggling hockey, so don't try to plan around my dates.
    But FWIW...
20th and 28th are no good for me.
    21st and 27th are possible.

I will be riding somewhere on Sunday 2/21. Hoping to explore Cajon Pass and areas along I-15, but I'm definitely willing to go someplace else. Just did a fun 50 mile loop last week in the hills above Hesperia with 5 others and I could easily be "convinced" to do that again.:ricky (see the thread "Easy Off-Road Ride - Hills Above Hesperia")

Also recently escorted a noob on his first dirt ride around the Cajon Pass area. Mostly west of I-15 (lost lake road???) and then a bit of Cleghorn. Big confidence builder for him and definitely worth the trip for me.

Post up so we can figure out who's going where....

    Bump...

Inmates Kavan and Donmoto with his dad, joined us for a little "skills development" at Gorman yesterday.
After wrestling with his DR650 in the soft sand for a while, Kavan jumped on my 300MXC for the rest of they day and discovered that "size does matter"!
Great day, great company, and great food (thanks to my lovely wife... what a romantic way to spend Valentines Day!!!).
I think everyone was pretty worn out by the end of the day!

I thought I recognized my old red helmet and then had a moment that I realized that was actually my dad on a bike. Holy moley!
Great sand and slow speed practice all day. Always nice to have a day out on the bikes.

I want to say THANK YOU to Tim and his wife for a feast! Also Donmoto.

As soon as I hit the sand and my face plant down right away. It just too heavy for noob rider and have hard time picking it myself . Interesting how DR ride in the sand and KTM 300 WXC ride top of the sand, just fly through the terrian. I was thinking about call it a day. Tim was kind enough to offer me to try out the KTM 300 WXC. I was hesitance at first, thought he bike was too tall for my short legs 30" inseam. Manage to get on it and test ride around in circle before we hit the trail and some steep hills. Tim was giving me more pointer through out the ride. To my surprise, how easy, quick and light (half a weight) KTM 300 is and a lot more fun. I was much better and more confident rider than beginner of the day. I guess, I need a lighter more dirt oriented bike. Now, I know why people call DR650 "bush pig". I'm not sure DR650 is right choice to take it to NOOB RALLY!

Hey Kavan, You did really well!
Don't beat yourself up... the bigger adventure bikes take a bit more effort to ride in that stuff, and considering your short experience on the DR and that deep soft sand in that wash, you did well to keep it upright most of the time... you only went down once... there were plenty of other opportunities to repeat the trick. (I'll bring the GS next time so you can see that it's possible to tame the DR... it's totally psychological... you need to be a bit more forceful and let them know who's boss... though occasionally they'll still bitch slap you, but that's part of the big bike fetish!!!)
There will be plenty of big bike friendly loops on the Noob Rally, so don't start thinking negative thoughts...
If you think about getting a smaller bike, add it to the stable if you can, because there'll be rides you wished you were on a bigger bike!
Think about that last loop we did... there was a little soft sand down that Pipeline Trail, but nothing like that wash, and apart from that, you would have blitzed that loop on the DR. Riding the lighter bike helped you concentrate more on your riding, but you would have done that loop no problems on the DR. Don't give up on the DR... let it know who's master.
...and picking it up is all technique.
    Let's do it again.

Your dad did really well considering we pretty much threw him in the deep end!
I hope he enjoyed it, he's a really nice guy, and I'd really like to see him out with us again.
He looked really natural on the bike, so he's going to get comfortable really quick!
(I actually think it would have been much better if we'd been able to stage at the area we rode together before... there was a lot more practice area there.)
    See you next time.

Hey Kavan, great job out there and way to be persistent. I'm going to second everything Tim said, especially the part about the second bike to hone your dirt skills. It's doable to do on the DR, but I've found it so much easier to advance more quickly on my XR400 than my prior street oriented XT600e. I can't recommend the XR400 highly enough, but there's plenty of other choices. As you could tell from a little while on the KTM, us shorter guys are able to get used to the height pretty quickly. The same goes for kickstarting.

Much appreciated Tim! I'll be sure to pass on the kind words. Despite so little experience on a dirt bike, he's got more natural balance than I do from years of riding bicycles in the sand at the beach as a kid. I think you're right about the other staging area. I feel like if we send him around that Maxey loop a bunch of times he'd have more confidence and comfort with the controls.
