FYI the road to the tag is closed just past the tag. I rode part of it and there has been a lot of washout repaired in the closed section. road is a dead end but a good ride for Adventure or Duel Sport bikes. Road has been gated about half way.

Well, we did have a rambunctious tag thief near there at one time.. SunnyDaze IIRC; and the location wasn't really far from his "home".. maybe he's still trying to remain practiced in the art of "snatch"..

    bummer...

Nah, the last one was lost at Fredricksburg, VA. Not really within easy poaching distance of the d-bag.

When I started this morning it was 74 degrees. That's like air conditioning on two wheels. Closer to the grab it was 92°, but 20190818_144936.jpg 20190818_144047.jpg a nice isolated thunderstorm cooled it down to Upper 70s and I had a few miles of wet roads. Then it cleared up for the last 10 miles till I found the TAG.

After an hour ride North, Luis is now hanging out at just outside the gate to the Morrow Mountain State Park. We stopped off at the Uwharrie Sportsman gas station, the older wood sided one on the Southwest side of the intersection of River Rd and HWY 24 27 W. The food there is awesome, cooked to order at their grill inside. Hang out in air-conditioned comfort while you chow down for lunch.

Head out Westward on 24/27 and make a Right on Valley Drive. Take that road to Morrow Mt Road and make a right. When you get to the entrance there is a small stone cabin with a small parking lot just outside the gate. Therefore access to Luis is available even if the gates are closed.
Once parked in the small paved lot by that cabin, look for a tree that fell and head to the stump growing from the rocks. Luis is inside the side of the stump under a large piece of bark and covered by leaves. Should be very easy to find, and within 30 feet of the parking lot by the cabin.

Looking back towards the way you would come in, the stump is behind where my motorcycle is parked, less than 30'. The stone cabin is behind me.

Here are the approximate GPS coordinates of the stump:

    Happy trails!

If you have time to ride North on River Road, head up towards the hamlet of Uwharrie. Cross Hwy 109 and stay North on Ophir Rd for a few miles. Make a right (East) on Flint Hill Rd. Get ready for some of the curviest two lane blacktop in the area! Cross Love Joy Road, and continue winding East until you get to Abner Rd. Make a right on Abner for a few more curves!

There is some great riding up through this area.

    Have fun and be safe!

Last night, I was planning a ride for this morning but wasn't sure where to go. I saw the "Yet another tag game" was looking for a place starting with "U", so I was going to head out to Uwharrie. I saw that really twisty road (Flint Hill Rd) on the map and knew I had to ride that while I was out there.

Browsing the forum more, I then came back across this thread, and what a coincidence! The tag for this was in Uwharrie! I had no problems finding the location. I just put the GPS coordinates into Google, while copying and pasting a degree symbol from somewhere on the internet, letting Google Maps convert it to decimal, then copying/pasting that into Waze. No problem! :jack

Here's the dead tree behind me...
    upload_2019-9-15_12-32-9.png

But I get to the tree stump in the rock, and I don't see the bag there. Is it buried in the plants I really don't want to touch (because I'm allergic to anything that looks like ivy)?
    upload_2019-9-15_12-34-42.png

I had no cell service at that spot, so I couldn't reference your post. Maybe it's INSIDE the stump?
    upload_2019-9-15_12-35-0.png

I'm certainly not sticking my hand in there! I finally got the bright idea to use a large piece of bark sitting nearby to dig through the leaves to see if anything is under the leaves (since I didn't recall the details from your post):
    upload_2019-9-15_12-40-58.png
    Hey, look! There's a bag!

    Bingo!

    upload_2019-9-15_12-42-40.png

So, me and Luis continued up the mountain (there was even a switchback! I wasn't expecting that!) and rode back home. Of course, we went around the Pee Dee River and took Flint Hill Rd for some fun twisties.

I can tell there was writing on the ziplock bag, but it's unreadable. There's a note inside the plastic container explaining the game, which is still readable.

I've got a trip planned with some buddies for Wednesday. We were talking about the coast, but since Dorian has ruined some of our planned stops, we're talking about going to the Tail of the Dragon. I'll try to place Luis somewhere out that direction.

    Awesome!

The roads in Uwharrie, particularly Flint Hill Road, are worth the short trip from the Raleigh area.

I'm glad you found Luis! I was worried that someone else had found it.

    LOL.
Dang it! I just this minute finished swapping out my front tire and that was going to be my scrub in the tire run....

    Nice snag.

Luis is in another state! I placed him yesterday. But I had no cell signal, and had to ride like crazy to get home at a decent hour, so I waited until today to post details.

Everyone knows where this location is, right?
    upload_2019-9-19_12-45-35.png

Go about 11 miles west of that. Enjoy the ride, smile for the cameras, and watch out for the hooligans. Once you hit the 11 mile mark and see the large turn-out, you'll see this sign on the other side of the road:

    upload_2019-9-19_12-50-35.png

See that tree I'm pointing at? It's about 20 paces before the sign. Here's a closeup of the tree:
    upload_2019-9-19_12-49-43.png
In the above pic, you can see the zip-lock bag sticking out at the base of the tree. Closer view:
    upload_2019-9-19_12-52-47.png

I covered it up a little bit better than that, with some rocks and sticks. I imagine it won't stay here long, since there are hundreds of riders just a few feet away from it every day. Hopefully one of them follows this thread and takes Luis for an adventure. BYE LUIS!!

Oops, almost forgot to post a pic with the bike at the drop location! And going through the phone, I might not have one! We took pics of each other at the drop, but not with the bikes. Here's the closest one I could find from yesterday. One buddy with the Connie, me with the FJR, another buddy with the Yamaha XSR900, and a bunch of other nobodies!
