Got 175 miles in today . Probably the last ride of the year for me . Time to give the bike a good clean and put it away . It was a great day around Thunder Bay . Saw quite a few bikes riding around . I went to Upsula for a piece ( 2 pieces truth be told ) of apple pie at the XTR gas station . Came back through Kekabeka Falls and down Oliver road .
Hope everyone had a great riding season .

I rode up to Dryden today. Probably my last ride so I washed the VStrom when I got back. I was surprised to see salt already on the road. The 502 is finished now and is a pretty great road to ride.

Another good loop is 622 with a boat detour to White Otter Lake castle; https://www.northernontario.travel/...astle-the-story-of-hope-and-unrealized-dreams A few years ago I rode to Clearwater Lake and rented a boat. There is a truck portage from Clearwater to White Otter where Jimmy Mcouat's legacy home stands. Well worth the side trip. Supposedly there is a 1940's German POW camp a little north of Mcouat's homestead, now wishing I had sought that location out too.

Yes, the sled trail from ignace used to go by the remains of the POW camp. There was also lots of mining and logging in that area back when the "Hermit" was alive. Many of the oldtimers used to say that the castle story was nice and romantic but truth was that it was actually a whorehouse because of all the activity nearby. Have ridden sleds there hundreds of times.
622 is a fun road but is blacktopped not pavedand has lots of logging truck traffic and critters crossing so keep an eye out when riding. You can make a fun loop going north to silver dollar or savant and back through Sioux lookout down as well

Here is the 502 now, hopefully the winter won’t be to hard on it. Only critter I seen was an otter crossing the road. 80981811-1030-429A-81FA-BCE659068B35.jpeg

Looks NWO got some money for roads the last couple of years. Did the Red Lake hiway and it was pretty good.

No wonder it's so big, and maybe why his bride to be would not come out there....Survival in the bush requires being an entrepreneur, doing what you must do. :-)

Is there anything visible or interesting at the POW camp?

I thought White Otter Castle was on an island? Is it accessible by bike? I'd like to see it in person one day.

I did just that this july. I had a bear run out in front of me on hwy 599 just north of silver dollar, scared the crap out of me. I believe the 599 is paved all the way up to pickle lake but I never went further north than the intersection of 516/599.

I took these pics somewhere on 516 between sioux lookout and savant lake:

You can find it on Google maps. I was there on a sled but I think a boat is the only other way. ACE1E279-B8AC-4A47-A0DF-B996854AEC92.png

Most of the roads in this neck of the woods have received an upgrade in the past few years. There are several options for a day loop ride out of Dryden with paved / mix gravel paved.

We tried to get in by bike years ago. We turned off Highway 17, near Burning Lake, and rode as far as the Upper Moosehide Lake area. We had to do a pretty nasty crossing at a washout, and continued on, but then got stuck in a peat swamp...took a few hours to get back out. We always vowed that we would try it again on smaller bikes...(we were on 650's)

Oh dear. I was just looking at Google Maps, and there appears to be a route around the the top of Lake Nipigon. Is this really true? If so, I see a new motorcycle trip for me.
