I ride that pretty frequently from Middleburg, where I live. I don't favor the inside very often on those roads - farm equipment to distracted tourists.

Yep. I just realized that in my original post I wrote "late afternoon." It was late morning. I rode through the scene in the afternoon on my way home. There wasn't much to see apart from the car tire's skid mark and some flare ash. Judging by the location of the skid mark and where I saw the damaged car earlier in the day, I'd guess the rider's line was too far to the inside. Could be wrong, obviously.

Came around a corner in my new-to-me truck on the way from 17 to 66 and found myself facing a lane-and-a-half wide piece of farm equipment coming at me.

It's a good thing I try really hard to not outride or outdrive my sight lines and had time to slow down and dive for the side of the road.

I always like to see how long it takes for that oncoming vehicle to realize, as I’m coming around the curve, that he doesn’t have the whole road to himself and quick get back in his lane. I wear a bright yellow riding suit. BRIGHT YELLOW.

Oh yeah. There are certain roads I’ve learned to just avoid.

    CArcher 77,

I'm in Montclair as well. What roads around us do you avoid?

Nothing near us, I’m talking about little country roads out west that are real fun to ride but barely wide enough for one vehicle and my bike.

Oh yeah. I have been on some of those as well. Come around a blind corner and there could be a anything in your lane.

How can I learn to avoid these roads?

I have generally learned to sacrifice my ideal curve in favor of safety.

I was recently driving a cage in Portugal on roads that would have been fun in a car and a total blast on a motorcycle. But no, too many people were coming into my lane. It was not enjoyable at all.

It might be a universal rule in that sloppy drivers are everywhere.

Hell, it’s not even what it was ten years ago. A great place to ride away from!

Montclair started out being the 'hoighty toighty' area in the area. My HS GF lived there... How I managed that, I have no idea.

I lived over by what's now Leesylvania State Park before it was a park. Lots of fun trails thru the woods down by the river. :ricky

Riding S and W from there is a good thing. :nod

Since we are going down memory lane... I remember when they were building Montclair. It was the shit back then, that’s for sure. The Woodbridge kids thought the Lakeridge kids were upper class, but you had to be at the back end of Lakeridge by the high school to really count. The Lakeridge kids were all impressed by Montclair kids. I was in the not awesome section of Lakeridge. Hahaha. Still, good times.
