In early December Im flying up to Brisvegas, collecting a GSA from my brother and riding it home to sunny Melbourne. Planning to take around 4-5 days.
Ive looked at maps, I've recalled memories of APC rallys and other rides, and got a few ideas in my head.
Planning on calling and drinking Winnas grog at Nerang, and having a cup of tea with Mouse around Byron, but what else should I do on the way home? Probably call and see/stay with Scott Britnell in NSW tablelands too.
Not particularly fussed about a route, but have an idea of the Snowies then gippsland for the last bit, maybe Barrie Way , or further east via Bombala/Bonang Hwy.
Prefer to stay off the main highways, Pacific or Newell, but what should I look at? Pub accom would be the plan.
Throw some ideas up, particularly if you're familiar with northern and central NSW
    cheers

    Calling @Mouse ...

Ginger's Creek ? On the Oxley.
    Ebor Falls ?
    Bellbrook pub ?
@James Cook and co did a ride down through NSW mainly on dirt in May last year..

I personally like the Gwydir highway for the elevations, scenery and lack of traffic midweek, on a roadbike.

You could do a lot worse than head out from the NSW/QLD border area over the Mt Lindsay Hwy to Woodenbong/Urbenville and then head down south via Bonalbo to the Bruxner
Then turn west on the Bruxner for a few kms and head south via Baryugil. All of this is fast gravel from memory with some tar as well. Nice country and easy riding but not a lot out there.
Pop into Grafton for fuel etc or then just head straight to the Old Grafton road up onto the tablelands via Newton Boyd.
After that there are lots of nice gravel options to work your way down towards Armidale.
From Armidale head towards Walcha Road/Niangala (say hi to Casey) then down the railway service road to Woolomin/Bowling Alley Point and Nundle.
After Nundle you could either do the Ellerston road via Hanging Rock and all the fords (not after rain) or just go over the crawney gap into the upper hunter via Moonan Brook.
That's a good start, mostly dirt and all easy dirt riding for a big bike.
Personally, from the upper Hunter I would avoid the Sydney Basin if I could and head either down the putty road (a fang on the tar) and up into the Blue Mountain or better still go out via Bylong/ and around the other side of the main range via Rylestone
You probably know where you are going after that...
    Hope this helps
Edit. Sorry just given route advice....

for non ride stuff if you head coastal and it then chooses to pi$$ down, as it can in December..
this place for a rest break.

my mate just took his new to him GSA down to PI GP and back.
if it's still raining and you head inland to avoid rain, his favourite road section we rode and recommended above also i see -
bylong valley way from Sandy Hollow, to Rylestone, onto Bathurst via wattle flat.
then down to oberon and down the guts to goulburn if its still raining.

we get a bit of rain around that time of year.
but if you head off early it's more common to rain late in the day.

Brilliant help all, I'm formulating a plan.
Lentil, that Rocky river road takes you past a large dam on the right before tenterfield? Think I've done it..... would be good to do again.
    Keep em coming !

Really don't understand why people love the Barrie Way so much. Doesn't appeal to me much.
    Just skatey dirt road.
Some nice bitumen or some proper dirt would be preferable. Bombala, Delegate and the Bonang road would be better. Cut across to McKillops bridge and catch the tail end if you must. The Bonang rd into Orbost is a magnificent piece of bitumen though.
    But you know all that.
