I was nearing Lake Placid and the daylight was fading fast. It had begun to drizzle a bit and I was looking hard for a place to put down a tent.
I just wasn't seeing anything that spoke to me.
I had made it my goal for the rest of the trip to not get a campground. I wanted to see if I could do it.
I was really striking out this evening though, and thought I'd have to go back to a campground I had seen earlier.
By the way, you always see the best spots when it's early in the day and you don't need it yet.
I had decided to try one more house. Jackpot!!!
It turns out they had a cottage out back and the tenants had just moved out. The nice folks let me put up there for the evening.
Awesome, no wet tent to put away.

I woke up to a beautiful day. The bad weather had moved out of the area.
I was really looking forward to this part of the trip. I would be going to places that I had never been.

Lake Placid is a very nice town. Worth the trip.

I did not see any alligators out there.

You didn't happen to see Betty White out there, did you?

Loving the report!! Great pics to boot! And that's something I've never tried before - asking people if you could set up tent on their property. I'll have to try that next time. Seems like you've met some wonderful people this way!

I was really enjoying the back roads of the Vermont countryside.

Outside of Middlebury, VT I headed up into the Green Mountains on a sweet road. I stopped at a small country store in Ripton.
    IMG_E4980.JPG

The old gal who owned it turned out to be a mean ole woman, but she had some neat things in there. I was in a great mood and killing her with kindness. She wasn't having any of it.
Her last words to me as I walked out the door were, "GET OUT OF MY STORE!"
I never did get my beer.
    IMG_4984.JPG

Down the road I found a nice little spot to get a sandwich.

I found a nice little park later and got my beer.
    IMG_4988.JPG

Later in the day I crossed the New Hampshire border.
    IMG_4991.JPG

I was considering riding up to the top of Mt. Washington, however they were all closed up for the day. IMG_4997.JPG

It was getting late in the day when I was approaching the Maine border. I took a side road and started looking for a big yard.
I decided to pull in here and try my luck. IMG_4999.JPG

The people that lived here were motorcycle riders also. They were very excited about providing me a place to set up. They offered me water and food, but I had everything I needed.
I rode out back and pitched my tent.

The mosquitos here were some of the worst I've ever dealt with. It was horrible. Once they find you it's all over.
Of course the locals have been saying they have never seen mosquitos this bad. Great.

"The owner said he mows this lawn with a small zero turn mower. Takes him hours."

When we seeing guys cutting a lawns like that, we always say. That must be all they ever do.
    Cut grass, again.

I'm in and enjoying the laid back trip and writing style. Thanks for letting me (in my own mind) ride along. These coming bike problems have me worried though.

I had a nice ride through Maine today.
    IMG_5005.JPG

Outside of Bangor I found a little road side store. Good place to grab a beer, pull out the chair and relax a bit.
    IMG_5007.JPG

It was very hot and humid out. The locals say they've never seen it like this at this time of year. Great. The store cooler was a great place to cool off.

I arrived in Calais, ME late in the evening. I would be going into Canada tomorrow.
I searched some side roads, talked to a lady on a lawnmower about putting up a tent in her big yard, and she directed me to this field next to their house.
It was a good spot, however, the bugs and humidity made it a low point of the trip.
I was able to get my food cooked, but had to go in the tent to eat it. Then the rain started so I had to zip her up. Wow was it hot and humid in their!
Tomorrow I go to an exotic foreign land, Canada!

Route 9 through Maine is a really lovely drive. I've ridden it twice on motorcycle in nearly perfect weather, did it stand out to you at all or was it kind of more of the same scenery?

I do have to ask, how do you deal with "nature calling" while camping in folk's yards?

I'm glad that you asked...I was curious as well. This could be the one thing stopping me from asking strangers to stay in their yard.
