Can someone explain to me what the difference is between the Nuvi 500 and the Nuvi 550. I have heard that the only difference is maps but if so what maps come with which unit. I looked on Garmin site but it still was no that clear. Thanks in advance

500 has City Nav lower 48 states + topo
The topo is just elevation lines and shading, no additional roads, etc. The City Nav overlays the topo unless you turn topo off.

550 has all of City Nav North America (includes Canada and Alaska) but no topo.

I have the 500 because I got a great deal on it. IMHO - if price is not a factor get the 550 and add topo maps later if needed. There are free topos available for many areas.

Other than maps the 2 units are identical.

    Thanks for the help

I think I may end up going with the 550 if the only difference is the topo

the 500 has 1000 waypoints capable..........550 only 500 waypoints capable

dont know that it is that important, but it seems to be to a guy i talked with as per he prefers more wayponts memory

I think they both have 500 waypoints. The only difference that I found between the two units is the maps

Nuvi 500 has the lower 48 states and topo maps and the 550 has North America maps.

I ended up going with the 550 and I like it overall.

I can't imagaine ever needing even 500 waypoints. Via points in routes are not included in that limit. Neither are custom POI's (points of interest). You can load a huge amount of POI's.

I actually think the 500 is supposed to replace the 550...that was my impression. Essentially the same. I got the 500 from Costco and Amazon now has a great deal as well at $199
