Are you sure the slide isn't in backwards?

    I didn't even know they made a 500, I thought the DT's only went up to a 400.

Disconnect the cable entirely and see if it's kinked, frayed or seized.
The inner cable should move effortlessly and smoothly in both directions with only light finger force.

Check that the throttle grip isn't binding against the housing.

Check that the throttle barrel isn't seizing against the handlebar.

With the throttle cable disconnected, and the return spring removed from the carb slide, check that the slide moves effortlessly up and down the carb body.

Yamaha made an SC500 based on the YZ/DT 400 and it had a counterbalance in it.

I had one as a parts bike,I remember shipping the bottom end and it weighing about 70+ lbs, just the bottom end. Balancer and all it was heavy.
