It used to go all the way around the mountain, you can actually come up the other end of the road and see where the slide took out the part too. But yeah lots of good canyon carving through Klikatat and out by White River Falls and Grassy Valley near Oregon Raceway Park that all look like that windy road picture you put up.
I have a thing for old abandoned roads. Even ones that fell out of favor when major highways and roads were built. They always pique my curiosity and I envision the old cars and trucks sputtering along. I've been wanting to explore the abandoned Ridge Route that predated I-5 from LA to Bakersfield. I've noticed a few sections of road just on the other side of a small valley along I-5. Wouldn't mind sniffing that out as well.
There are a few in Ohio that I want to check out, including one that runs into a completely deserted town. I am doing some research and planning on doing a "haunted roads" trip in Ohio (which has a lot, for some reason.) There are also plenty in Kentucky, though I have a feeling that most of the "abandoned" roads in KY look that way on purpose...
Old abandoned road & campground somewhere in WV a couple years ago. The bridge jigged if you jumped on it! I may go explore near home for some abandon roads now :)
Old Military Road, Southeastern Oklahoma. Built in 1832 to move troops and supplies west from Ft. Smith. Also used for the relocation of the Choctaws into Indian Territory.
County Rd 12 in WV. The other end of it, just to the left of the trees. This is about 8 miles from the other pictures.
That's a rentable road actually. Owned by the museum. I was with a group that did a track day of sorts out there last summer. Alot of fun.
What is experimental about it? To see if the combination of g forces and giggling like an idiot will make you pass out?
For sure, WVhillbilly! It was built as an experimental road many years ago: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryhill_Loops_Road Cliffjord: Yes, The Rally at the Gorge organizers rent it out almost every year-that was the event I rode it during... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
There were A LOT more roads from over the weekend, but I only remembered to take a picture at the very end!
A long abandoned section of the Mother Road in Arizona. And a original section of Highway 101 in the Redwoods section of Northern California.
