Nice shots, great to see all the cabins still there.
Added the GPX file to that last day if anybody was looking for Steele Pass tracks.
Thanks again for coming along, can't wait for the next time.
Thanks for all the pics and... great stuff as always.
Nice to see you out there. Ride safe and thanks for the RR
Just found this ! Thanks for a great report and amazing pictures. I'm never likely to get that far south so i love these posts.
A little late to the RR. As usual a LB RR is sublime. I needed a dose of DV too.
The rain reminded me of my first trip to the driest place in North America. After arriving at Panamint Springs Resort late in the evening, I woke at 3am to a torrential downpour pounding the roof of my cabin. the next morning I set off to explore. On one long, straight stretch of road I spotted something in the road. Luckily I slowed to around 45mph when I drove over the softball sized stones that had washed across the road overnight. Ever since I am awed at the robustness of rental cars!
this old-friend-thread popped up today ... fun way to spend an hour at work.
had to dig into the way-back machine to see where we were talking about going in my posts in this thread from 2012 ...
Cary at the bat sign in Nov. 2012 ... we must still have been newly-weds. ha.
thanks again for all the inspiration and tips over the years, larryboy!
I was visiting this thread today to see if my pictures were still alive. I threw a few likes around to catch a fish and got a live one!
I'm thinking about adding a little update...
Ok, spring 2017 was my last update in this thread. I don't think I've ridden the 640 since. Life you know, a couple surgeries, moved to a new house, a lifelong illness that doctors aren't interested in helping me figure out...I think I've got it figured out now, failed relationships now reconciled...life is short, the death of yet another friend gone too soon.
Yet my same old love affair with the desert continues in Saline Valley, sometimes three times a year. My stays have gotten longer, 14 days at a stretch.
I know I was in Saline Valley in February of 2018, but I think my phone crashed right after that trip. Might have some camera pics, but you'll have to use your imagination.
We lost Vance in 2018, so I went to his memorial at Furnace Creek at the end of October 2018 instead of Saline Valley in November like normal.
Some snaps from that trip. Soaked at Tecopa and Serpentine.
February 2019, good times were had.
Somewhere in here we were having meetings with the NPS over the future of Saline Valley to secure use for our children and grandchildren.
I rode down to the springs for a meeting in May one year. It can be blistering hot then, but we lucked out and it was nice.
Another time I had to go home after a two week stretch and turned around the following Saturday for a Sunday meeting.
Extreme options for the future were, do nothing...not possible due to California laws and remove all trace of man...not possible for we the user. Something in the middle was agreed upon and at some point there will be changes. The auto shop has already been removed, call Miller's on the Sat phone and bust out the credit card.
April 2019, got close, but stopped in Kernville for a get together.
It was a great time.
Oh yeah, you might notice a lack of alcohol drinking by me. I quit my professional drinking career in August 2017 for health reasons. I can drink, but as a rule I just don't anymore.
Nice updates. Modern bikes are cool.
Cruise control is life changing. I talk to the cops less and less fatigue by the time I get to the dirt.
Halloween 2019. That's how much stuff you bring for two weeks unsupported. Silt is bad, deep fried hens are delicious.
Time flies, but yer having fun!
Nice to see an update from you.
