I read books and got a lot of sun for another week. I always feel a tremendous sadness leaving Death Valley or Saline Valley. I have gone desert and can hardly stand to be away from it.

I knew things were happening in the outside world. When will I be back in a tub alone at 3 am waiting for the next shooting star or the rising of a super moon?

    Heading home...

Thanks for the fresh pics (and the quick edit). :D

Thanks for adding those @dave6253 , that was a fine time!!

So, fall 2020. The tubs in Saline Valley are drained and disabled. I stayed home Veterans Day week for the first time in 15 years or so.

That sucked. February 2021...still not allowed to soak at Saline Valley. The only hot springs of any kind shut down in California. I won't get political, but I'm done sitting at home.

I'm going to need lights for what I have planned.

    IMG_20210207_154526946_HDR.jpg

I was going to replace fork seals, but that would be pointless...this will be the last trip until I can have the tubes replated.

I need a new single burner propane stove. My wonderful wife looked all over for me without luck. I found one in Delano, that place has really grown up.

    Found my way to Ridgecrest.

It took me 2.5 hours from Furnace Creek to get here. I haven't been here since 2010 on the XR650R in daylight and only took one slight wrong turn in the dark. The park is very full of people, this was my only shot at getting a cabin to myself on a busy Presidents Day weekend.

Yes, I brought 24 pounds of fire logs with me.

I'm at Emmett and Ruth's cabin. Most people say Emmett's cabin, but I include Ruth because without our strong supportive spouses most of us wouldn't be out here.

I've been curious. How do you transport your cooking oil, and the bird? And how do you clean up after deep frying a small bird?

Use the bottle the oil came in to transport. If I'm moving the next day I'll poor the oil back in the bottle for the next day. Boil the last bird and the oil goes in the fire. I use the pot to put trash in and wash it at home. If I get bored and there's some dish soap at the hot springs I'll scrub up the pot there. It's no big deal.

I scored some water!! I was going to be cutting it close on the water I brought with me. Between this and snow melt puddles I drank on top of rocks I did well.

Boil some water for a cup of decaf.

The cabin is nasty dirty, but not much mouse sign. I don't clean when I arrive because it would be a dry clean and the dust will hang in the air for a long time. I'll clean when I leave and brought an N95 for just that purpose.

I was exhausted when I got here last night and didn't eat my dinner. 450 mile, 12 hour day yesterday. Salmon steaks cooked on the wood stove for breakfast.

    IMG_20210213_094526343.jpg

I also spent half the night fixing the stove pipe. The stack outside was off and on the ground, it wouldn't draw without it. I couldn't fix it right by myself, I needed another person inside to hold it against my pushing. I came up with a foil seal and got it working pretty good.

I've had this place marked to see for a while and forgot about it until your post here.

When you are coming up the canyon and it turns left or straight to get to the cabin, there is a right turn that can be made but the trail seems to stop up canyon. Anything up there to see?

You can't continue down Redlands Canyon, the BLM has finally installed the wooden road block right where you turn left to go up to Emmett's. I've walked down aways and there is a massive dry waterfall not too far down. Emmett writes about a lot of interesting things in the area in his book.

    https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1284805.These_Canyons_Are_Full_of_Ghosts

I have a newer version, search around.

You really can't get down Redlands even on foot anymore, the Briggs mine is in the way.

Edit, it's been awhile, but I've google earthed that right turn quite a bit looking for a way up to Middle Park. It looks doable on the computer screen, but on the ground it's impossibly steep. Just like you can't get from Arraste Spring to Rogers Pass, it's nearly vertical.

I'm going to go look for Emmett's gold mine today. I've read his book, but it's been a few years. Near the cabin there is a cable stretched across the canyon. There is a loop tied in it and I imagine it as an anchor for another line coming down the canyon. So, I head up there. Others have thought the same because I found some footprints waaay up the canyon.

    Nope, it's not up here.

I wanted to continue up to the ridgeline for a look, but the terrain was a little too rugged for being alone.

I figured I'd go back down and follow the cable. Maybe it's a zip line?

I found an old water tank and what looks like a tent site that predates the cabin. If I remember right, the cabin was built in 1955.
