We are working our way through the morass. One step at a time.

Commuting option A is now viable. I picked up this delightful scooter over the weekend. A 155CC model from Yamaha. Ever heard of the Smax? Me neither. Seems like a nice one and is guaranteed a podium on the SCBR next year. Seat should be one of the better ones on the market.

The lady's closet it back to normal fleet maneuvers. Unused purses are in their corresponding allergen free boxes and the 47 identical black outfits are lined up, ready for battle.

Commuting option B is almost a reality once again! FINALLY got the inter cooler hose back on AND I figured out the root cause.

    Intercooler_Hoses_4.jpg

(not my car but photo illustrates problem area).

See the little sliver of blue between the clamp and the black pipe? At some point 10 years ago I cut this hose too short and clamped it flush. Either that or the worm clamp I used had just overlap enough to stay on. It finally let go with a bang and proved to be a PITA to reattach using a wider t clamp. Post mortem analysis revealed that the clamp that let go had been crooked for a long time. It's a miracle it didn't pop sooner.

I was able to remove enough crap around it to get a good look at it and pushed it in a little further than before. T-clamp tightened down and pinched the hose as god intended. The silicone hose had enough flex on the other end to not cause an issue. Hurray!

Fired right up and turbo kicked in as expected as I gassed it. Still have a CEL but I probably just need to clear the codes.

Of course, I can't find the power brick to the ONLY windows laptop I still own so I can't fire up VAG-COM to clear it.

    Stupid Windows. :baldy

I also flushed the coolant and changed the oil. I had 4 quarts. It takes 4.5. :baldy:baldy

Are we allowed to mix Rotella T4 with Mobil 1? Of COURSE we are! This isn't an oil thread!!!

The scooter resurrection might happen sooner than I imagined. :happay

Unless I fall in love with the SMax.

    I hear it's pretty awesome!

He bought one only to discover it doesn’t fit him. For a 4,200 mile ride in 10 days you want a bike that fits you.

My plan is to take one of our GTS especially since next year there there are no dirt trails.

That would ruin the whole thing for me right there. Dirt is part of the appeal.

The rough route has been revealed!

    2020-Scooter-Cannonball-Map.jpg
As I suspected, Adirondacks, Niagara Falls, Mac Bridge, Badlands, Black hills, Rte 50.

    I like it.

It's going to be Hot As Balls [tm] crossing UT/NV/CA in mid July. Better start thinking about clothing...

    That's gotta be cheap, right?

Clothing will be cheap: shorts, flops and half helmet! Done, proper gear for cross country riding. Maybe a hydration bladder on the back seat, if you feel like indulging a little. :photog

Good luck with the Pony Resurrection. I'd go that route, makes a better story when you are in Eureka CA.

I can't see going far wrong with a Vespa. They are even comfortable for me. Is there really a paved route all the way across the U.S. that is legal for scooters? I sure would like to have maps of that route.

So I'm still not loving the SMax.

I do however see the appeal. The engine does a fabulous job for being so small and the frame being so heavy.

Yesterday I found myself toying with the unthinkable...

    Mod the SMax into submission?

    Wait, what???

    Really???!!??

Yes, I mean why not? (Uh oh, here come the bullets)
    • It will be cheaper than fixing the Bev.
    • It's a newer bike so it *should* be more reliable.
    • There are BBK's from Malossi and Koso that should get the power up to where I need it to be. I don't think I can sustain 60MPH in headwinds or uphill with the stock 155CC. 183CC might do the trick. I NEED more displacement. I'm just too heavy to keep up with featherweights on an underpowered platform.
    • There's talk of a support van for all riders next year so I won't have to carry as much stuff every day.
    Can it be done?
    Is it worth it?
Can anything adult sized catch the little people on SMax's next year?
    Will I ever be happy?
    Why is the sky blue?

So many questions. We might need to crunch some numbers again...

Why don’t you stop fucking around and just buy the yellow Vespa 300 you want?

Unless the route changes to go around Lake Erie, you'll need a passport or "enhanced" license or you'll never get across the bridges and back into the U.S. If I was going to consider buying a scooter for the CB, I'd seriously the baby Burgman.

US customs could throw a real "luck factor" into that leg. Crossing from Ontario to NY is usually a real pita.

Because It's not time yet. I wouldn't run the Vespa on the cannonball.

I also want to wait and see if there are any issues with the HPE.

    But most importantly,

THERE IS NO DRAMA IN THAT.

    :)

Go tell the organizers. I'm all set with international travel.

Then again, the unknowns add to the fun, no?

Jeezus, that was under my radar. CC's are right but it otherwise looks like the exact same seating position as the SMax.

What about a kymco people gt200

    Or gt300

    Or a carb’d people s250

All upright, mostly flat floored, and nice handling scoots.

We're talking scooters here, not socks.

    Wait...

They multiply the same way, don't they.

    Shheeeeeiiiitt.

Could be worse. They might just occasionally vanish in the dryer or something.
