Numa and I took another little ride around upstate/midland South Carolina on Saturday. A few shots from the middle part of the ride. As we were coming from the west, we more or less followed the route of the the Rockton & Rion RR. We spent a little while photographing at the SC Railroad Museum, which is primarily about the Rockton & Rion. Rockton (on the map now = Winnsboro Mills) was the main terminal, and the granite quarry at Rion was the other end (extended later). About 12 miles. The RR pulled granite from the quarry to be transferred to more long distance trains.

The original quarry office at Rion, the quarry is beyond the office. Most everything is off limits. We met one of the museum volunteers as we got here, they were having a work day. After he got over his suspicions of us he was most informative tour guide!

Old tanker in the Rion yard. The Lionel train set we had as kids had one that looked like that.

Beyond the dumpster and the hyster, the old structure used to support the belt to bring rock from the quarry.

Across the street from the yard. This old plant produced grit from the granite, for use in chicken feed.

We used to ride in similar passenger cars back in the early '50s.

The display train is accessible for entry in the middle and here. I believe one could enter any time.
