This stretch of road had two foot bridges for two places, and this low water bridge (see the goose). Well, it used to be a low water bridge.

Of the three places, this is the only one that actually looks habitable, maybe a summer getaway as there is no way to get the car to the other side.

The foot bridge is totally missing here. The cables are still there; that which looks like fence posts on the yonder side of the river are actually uprights still attached to the cables.

A little downstream of the bridges.

Really begs for a 'denial' line.

A little farther down the road was a convenience center (trash). Looks like Santa's been bad!

    One last Cane River crossing.

And almost home, the remains of an old cotton gin.

That was a nice ride and I believe I am getting a better understanding of the new camera.

    Here are a few shots from Saturday's ride with the gang; Augie @augiedog , Larry @Flasher , Jon @JMforPres , and Numa @BluRidgeRider .

Came up on a local Amish buggy on the way to the meet up at Polkville, NC. From my little bit of research, there are evidently around 10 families mostly living in a line from Polkville to Ellenboro.

After breakfast on the way to Green Knob, one of many rustic places

At the Green Knob overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, getting ready to walk.

The forest service road seen below is Curtis Creek Rd, which we came up today.

Starting up the trail. Information says this is a 1/2 mile hike, methinks a little more......... and all of it straight up!

Looking back across the BRP from the same place.

A little higher up the trail

Mountain rhododendron is everywhere around the old (1931) fire tower we hiked to.

Jon working his way down the tower.

Flasher; the steps sway like a hanging bridge.

Augie readies his camera. The other fella was part of the family that chased us up the hill.

A shot from the top, where we just left Augie. Looking at the BRP southbound. One or more of this group noticed this tower on a ride we all did sometime last year and so here we are.

Clockwise from the last shot; looking at Mt Mitchell, about 1-2 o'clock from the old power transformer.

We just meet friendly folks everywhere we go.

The walk back down was easier............

I really do like the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We saw a little waterfall while on the gravel section of NC 197.

    A nice ride.

Well, I had another nice ride last Friday. Guess if I don't post 'em now I probably never will.

Both the SC State Tag, and the Upstate SC Tag were in the mountains of SC, so that was the plan.

    Heading up yonder today

Couple views of Pleasant Ridge County Park, Greenville Co, SC

    Old buildings on SC 11

Then I took Persimmon Ridge Rd which gets you about 1/3 of the way up Caesars Head

Moved one of the tags to Symmes Chapel aka Pretty Place. It really is pretty!

Took a little different route than I usually do after crossing into NC. Nice one lane bridge over the French Broad River on Hannah Ford Rd.

Water fall on Diamond Creek (Rd)

Derelict old school bus on Diamond Creek Rd

Blue Ridge Hills Lake, near Lake Toxaway

    That a way

Below Sapphire, NC. Not exactly auction ready

The Bad Creek Reservoir view was much clearer today than other times I've stopped at the overlook. Usually the Blue Ridge haze is stronger.

Next up the Fish Hatchery. Talked to several fishermen people who all had a good day after recent stocking of the East Fork Chattooga River, which shortly runs into the Chattooga River, which is the SC/GA border in this area.

Finished coming off the hill on Winding Stairs Road, where I saw this (sometime) waterfall.

Lake Cherokee (posted private) at the bottom of Winding Stairs

    Crossing Lake Keowee/Toxaway on 11.

Augie and I went along with a small group to ride the MABDR. While we didn't finish the route, we still had a good ride.

We head up the road from Augie's

    North of Hickory, NC

A little break in Damascus, VA

On the BDR out of Damascus

The group at a campground one of them had stayed at earlier

    On up the road

A short break discussing the booming thunder

We spent the night near Bland, VA 37.1801, -80.94016

After packing up in the morning we rode a couple miles to Trent's Grocery (Bland, VA) and got a biscuit.

Then we headed up the road.

    Directly we happened upon this

Quite a lot of this today

We had to take a little break to install routes/tracks on some gps units.

Found this lovely overlook, north of Maybrook, VA (wide spot)

    Our intrepid leader, Al

Really pretty place. Could learn nothing after a brief search returned a different looking 'Southern Comfort' in VA.

I really should try to figure out how to add coordinates to my exif data.

This route has many old churches

We took a lunch break at a small shelter at this church

    After lunch

After too much of this stuff, the two old guys on 1200s decided to start using the not gravel as much as possible. Yes, that would be Augie and me.

We did manage to rendezvous with the others one more time the next day.

Since we had no plan for this situation we rode a lot more miles than necessary to find a campground. It was great!

After a good night in a campground with hot shower, and a neighbor accidentally discharging his weapon (no one hurt) we continued the ride.

This is looking back from whence we came, at the entrance to the next gravel stretch. Yes, we stayed on pavement.

    Some interesting structures

    Donkeys 'waddup?'

Williamsville, WV. Looks like the sign painter ran out of room on the top line and started over.

The other guys, staying on gravel when possible, came down into town (?) from the road angling to the left. Their route had them running this little stretch the opposite direction than we did. We had found a group camping just behind us and believed the 'four motorcycles just like yours' were our group.

Our route followed the Cow Pasture, then the Bull Pasture rivers. Pretty sure this is Bull Pasture.

Lots of lovely old churches on the route

    and barns

    and neat old homes

Pretty sure this was a historical (unoccupied) home as this 'Fort George on the Bullpasture River' historical sign was on the same straight.

Once we passed the point that the others should rejoin our road from their gravel, we took a break here. They came along after a bit.

One of the few times the past two days we actually knew what state we were in!

Seems to be a working farm and looks to have a history.

We found an old mill; it is being restored.

Looking in the lower level door shown above.

Looking in the upper level door.

Probably not a mile up the road this fine old house.

    With this mill beside it.

On US 220 between Ft Seybert and Petersburg. We should have been on a different paved street on the other side of the ridge some ways east.

There had been heavy rain in this area (north of Petersburg) the day before. More was forecast for later today..........

Our water biggest water crossing of the day!

    An old crib.

Approaching this place it appeared we may have to go through his garage

As a bit of an aside, we met a truck tractor somewhere on this road. He waited on us, but I was still glad he didn't have his trailer with him!

In view of the pending rain (and it was an impressive rain!) we were fortunate to find this shelter and get permission to use it!

It was on the South Branch Potomac River.

    Which is already running full.

Augie set his tent up on a picnic table.

When it was obvious the weather was going to be rough, we moved me under the shelter too. Glad of it!

So the next morning we dawdled and left no trace. Hard to tell from this but the river had definitely risen.

Oldtown (WV/MD border) Toll Bridge over the North Branch Potomac River. Motorcycles are $.50 apiece. The North & South Branches meet soon below this.

We looked around this C & O Canal lock.

    Looking down stream (canal)

Here you can see part of the lock gate hinges. The 'lake' area was for barges to tie up and do business/rest or whatever.

    Lock keepers quarters

    In Oldtown, MD

Just a bit farther down stream, the C & O canal tunnel. By coming to the tunnel area and then not paying attention, we got off the track. Way off the track.

The roof is raining so I did not go through.

Nearing Charles Town, WV. We have been through WV, VA, and back to WV since Oldtown!

Got back on track at Harper's Ferry. We were very much in awe of all the rock walls, rock buildings, more rock walls.

    This is Burkittsville, MD.

Our last bit of not pavement

We had a fork in the road just ahead. We took the shorter way back to pavement. The rain was getting intense by the time we reached the junction where the longer route got to pavement........

So we spent the night at a motel in Carlisle, PA.

    IMG_0060 (1).JPG

Not only did we get a good rate, we got preferred parking! And the included breakfast was extensive.

We had intended to go to the end of the BDR, even if we did not run all the dirt/gravel. The impending weather changed that up!
