Financially, I can retire whenever I'm ready. But I love my work and still very much enjoy being in the middle of the action. (I'm in Raleigh right now meeting with members of the NC House and Senate to discuss issues relating to the electric utility industry. Fun stuff!)

When it gets to the point where I'm not looking forward to going to work each day, I will retire. But I do get a little bummed once in a while when I have to miss a good ride.

I am so hopelessly behind in posting pictures. Some from yesterday's ride up around Lake Adger, NC, then up to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Back to South Carolina. The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a hiking/biking bit of macadam in the Greenville, SC area. Back when, it was a railroad that made it up to the blue ridge, but never got as far as they wanted. The locals dubbed it Swamp Rabbit due to soggy ground the right of way ran through.

Went to the dairy yesterday. Took a circuitous route to play Tag, and the tag I went to pick up was Hagood Mill, Pickens, SC. It is a working grist mill, but yesterday was a volunteer day and the the mill was idle. That's ok, there were no crowds, too. There are several buildings, the mill proper, a couple of cabins of local note, a large air conditioned barn for the petroglyphs, a still, blacksmith, cotton gin. This is not a comprehensive tour.

Just going to add the pictures in order.

Guess I should take a tip from @popscycle and post a few at a time, trying to get something posted.........

Rode yesterday (Thursday 9/5/19) with Augiedog and Flasher. We met up for breakfast then rode north.

Got breakfast in Lattimore, NC at the Depot Cafe. Good food and better prices.

I took us up a road that turned to 'private road'. Oh well, saw a couple derelicts on the way in and out

We rode up NC 226A, no pictures there; locals know it's a great road. Then through Spruce Pine on towards Elk Park, NC.

Picked up the SE Lair of the Dragon tag along the way.

Building across the road, which appears similar in construction, maybe part of the original business(?) has a cap of kudzu.

We cut off of 19E for a while, going up the adjacent valley.

Then on through Minneapolis, Elk Park, and Roan Mountain we rode part of Old Railroad Grade Road. Mostly bicycles and hikers back in here. It parallels 19E for a few miles.

We backtracked a bit to NC 143 to ride over Roan Mountain on to Bakersville, NC. Stopped at a park bench beside the Doe River (Roan Mtn state park) for a swig of water.

That old rail trail, like old post road trails up here, is sweet and the kind of thing we like riding the most these days. Thanks for the pics!

We had lunch in Bakersville at Mammies. Good food.

Then we went down NC 80, another road not well suited to lots of on the fly photos. But not quite as difficult as 226A.

Somewhere on 80 while still north of 19E

That road off to the right on the other side of the bridge goes up to the Yancey county landfill. I hauled a lot of garbage out of there some years ago. It is now a transfer station for garbage and utilizes the old landfill methane for several craft purposes.

The old bridge. I watched them drill, blast and so on to build this new bridge when I trucked up there. While the road looks wide here (it is) the old road wasn't. Glad I didn't have to drag a 53' trailer any farther up the road than I did! That's the North Toe River down there, route of the CSX railroad (formerly Clinchfield RR). Tracks run through the cut on the right of the photo.

This is just past the dirt road visible above. This guy used to have several more pieces out here.

Nice pics Loren. Damn shame they put that decent looking Isetta on top of the diner. That should still be running the roads and giving it's owner a fun ride. Don't care about what they did to the Studebaker. LOL.
