In the words of the famous author, Snoopy; 'it was a bleak and gloomy day.'

We shortened up our trip leaving Florida's panhandle. We were pretty sure we would have nice weather until near the north end of the Natchez Trace Parkway (Nashville, TN). Then there would be a lot of precipitation with the possibility of snow in higher elevations.

We decided to try to skirt the rain immediately in front of us, then hook to the northeast.

We entered Alabama on a back road.

As we neared what appeared to be another sleepy south Alabama town, Elba, we were greeted by a surprising sight.

Having both spent much of our working years in big trucks we thought it very interesting to find this Dorsey Trailer plant.

Not too far past Elba, nearing Montgomery, AL we caught that rain we were trying to stay behind. Some of it heavy.

We spent the night at a cheap motel in Sylacauga, AL.

Not finding a proper sort of cafe for breakfast we started on up the road. Had a bit of unpaved that was a bit snotty after all the rain in the night. Oops.

Found the Blue & White cafe in Ashland, AL. 'Does the name have a significance?' "Yes, it is the High School Football team" Good breakfast.

Leaving town we passed the Wellborn Cabinet Co.

There was another cabinet business (Integrity) back in town.

Welcome to beautiful downtown Monroe, GA. The sign says. Historic Walton County Courthouse.

Very shortly I would have us chasing our tails in Athens, GA. At that point we decided to cut our losses and go out to I-85 to get home; so as not to be too much after dark getting home. Not going to a motel this close to home.

Our friend Numa (@BluRidgeRider ) likes to get the year started with a New Years Day ride. Rain, snow, 40 below and all that we have been doing Numa's New Year's ride for years. Unfortunately the flu knocked him out of this year's ride.

In fact, by the time to ride it was Jon (@JMforPres ) and myself. Most beautiful New Year Day weather we've had in years!

On my way to the breakfast meetup, me & my shadow see what's left of a old home. Note the twin chimneys.

Happened up upon a lovely old church

Oddly enough, most of the headstones in the cemetery didn't seem to be as old as the church building

It's not really a picture of a trailer; there is an old chimney standing in the middle of the yard

Sorry I wasn’t able to join you guys. That’s the first New Year’s day I haven’t ridden in over 20 years.

Glad Jon and you had good weather and good riding!

Now to finish up the day's ride.

We visited the Washburn General Store (National Register of Historic places)

    Signage dates it to 1831

The old home place. All photos so far taken from the same spot

Since they were closed, tried to get a sample shot through the glass

And the window on the other side of the door.

When facing the store this barn is to the right

And the house is across the road.

We ended the ride at the Lincoln Center in Bostic, NC. I failed to photograph the information board at the door, but the first paragraph of the link has the same information.

The Center uses the old Bostic RR depot

With wet weather on the way I took the opportunity to get in a little over a 100 mile ride yesterday PM.

My ride took me up Green River Cove Rd heading to Saluda, NC.

Once you get started up, the road narrows; pretty much a one lane two way road. Only met one cage! This section of the road has so many blind switchbacks that it can be more than a bit edgy in summer.

    Pretty much a 1st & 2nd gear stretch

Yes, I had to stop for this

After going out the other side of Saluda I went to see the Saluda Nature Park/Judd's Peak overlook.

While researching this spot it looked like Pace Mtn Rd would continue on down the back (other) side of this mountain. It did, a little over 2 miles to US 176 a couple of miles above Saluda.

I had seen another one of these concrete covers back up the hill, but it was a couple hundred yards up the mountain from the road

I crossed 176 and rode Macedonia Rd to Camp Creek Rd looping back to 176, then through Saluda.

Went back to get a 'bridge' shot

Then ran up on another one lane bridge

    Then the road widened

After passing through Saluda I headed on home down 176, the 'old' Saluda Grade.

On the lower portion of the grade these 2 bridges cross & recross the North Saluda River

This is one of the roads the trucking company that taught me to drive trucks used as training grounds. Back in the '70s they were having trouble getting I-26 to stay on the side of the mountain and this was the Interstate route for all traffic. After I completed training and was on my own, I got lucky one day as I climbed the hill (we are going downhill here). A big truck crashed in this left hander, tipping over away from the road. I was one of the vehicles that got through before all the rescue stuff started.

I love Green River Cove Rd! It’s a great stretch of road for practicing really tight switchbacks. It’s a handful on fully loaded Gold Wing with a passenger in pillion.
