I'm kind of a map nut, so, if others are interested in some really good ones of CO...Lattitude 40 are the best, I also like Drake Mountain Maps, both/all available at the outdoor store in Silverton or maybe online. The Butler ones would have steered you away from ST. I would much rather do the crazy stuff you guys did on my DRZ (or a trials bike!), even then some of it is sketchy! Great riding! :1drink We plan to hit the Silverton area in a couple weeks for the fall colors. :clap And maybe snow showers...

For all you Colorado nubbies and wannabees, Colorado has ROCKS! Big ass ROCKS, and slippery ROCKS! And BTW, it rains EVERY afternoon in Western Colorado.

Used to be you could ride/drive right to the Alpine Tunnel. It caved in decades ago but the portal was there. It was the first rail route over the Divide but was so difficult to keep open that the Denver South Park ultimately went under. Last train was through there in 1910! And the better route turned out to be over Marshall Pass and through the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

Lionsroaar and I had very little traffic on all of the passes we rode with the exception of California Pass. That one seemed to be pretty busy.
    What a trip it was.:clap

I don't care that Matt does ride with a purse :D....... the man can ride. Epic riding two up over Schofield Pass in those conditions. KTM is a fool if they don't sponsor you! As always Kelly, an epic ride report. Thanks for posting.

    Wow!
from Bend, OR to Ten Sleep, WY.

    and from engineer to brewmeister!

    :beer

    Congratulations and best of luck!
That looks like it would be a fantastic place for an ADV rally :evil

    Keep us posted, Justin!

    Thanks, atomizer! :D
And thanks for the cool video, that was really neat. :thumb
    was that your group??

    hi nmtrialsguy -
    thanks for the map info!
that would be really helpful for the planning types out there...

By the way, now that we're home, I did find Pearl Pass on our crappy map :gdog
    :lol3

Have a great trip to Silverton - stay warm!

    hi Joel,
:evil I wish! fingers crossed. :lol3

hey, you should be leaving for the KTM rally soon -
Have an awesome time! Take lots of pics and do a ride report :deal

    Thanks, kdxkid!
The guys were having a blast - wait til you see the pics from Moab! :evil

    Aw, McRuss -
It sounds like you really miss Colorado!

    :lol3

I wish people could still ride through the tunnel. :cry
    Thanks for the info!

Wow, you guys were lucky! :clap
I know the rain helped keep the traffic down for us, too. Hancock was just a mess that day...:rolleyes

    Thanks, hanksmybuddy!

Well, since we were in the Rockies, Matt brought an extra special purse...

    :rofl

Heh. That joke never gets old...
    (right, matt? :evil)

    Aw, you're welcome NWBoon!
This was a great group and they were all super riders...but it does take extra work to drag my fat butt around. :lol3
So, yes, to me matt is extra-amazing. :D

    Oh, thanks ksmdigital and BcDano!
    :freaky

    Very kind of you. :shog

OK, I'm having technical difficulties this morning,
I lost this whole comment post 2x already! :cry

hopefully the report post won't give me as much trouble...

the rest of Day 6, coming up...eventually. :dunno

    Day 6: 8/6/13
Gunnison to Lake City, CO 191 miles, continued

Matt and I have stopped here for gas, but never for food.

It was cold and rainy and seemed like the perfect day to try the cafe.

I was not looking forward to camping tonight. :nah
Wet gear never dries in a tent. It was going to suck...

Originally, I had made reservations for Lake City,
but cancelled them when we stayed an extra night in Gunnison.

While the guys were ordering lunch, I decided to try and get those reservations back.
It was very last minute, but the Silver Spur had 2 of the 3 rooms left.

I’ll take them! :D Yay! :clap

As I put away the phone, I noticed this guy on our luggage...

Wow. Where did you come from?

I left him at the Trading Post.

    Lunch was fantastic :dg

I can’t remember what Matt got (Tomichi Burger?), but it came with ham and cheese.
    Weird.

Afterwards, Scott ordered apple pie ala mode...

    a popular choice.

Looks like the Osos were happy they got lunch today!

I don’t know if anyone will recognize this road, but it’s on the TAT and the CDR (continental divide ride).

There used to be elk in pens, on the left side of the road.

    2009
    [IMG]

    They’re gone now.

    Usually, it’s sunny and nice.

    2010
    [IMG]

    Not today.
Today it was cold, rainy, and very very slippery.

    Looking back at the Osos.

We almost ate it in the slick mud, so Matt slowed down.
Our weight made the front end really light and scary.

The solo Osos could stand up and lean forward.
Radek and Lica actually had fun...

    Not the schoolbus. Wiggly wiggly!

Another shot of the guys...cold as we were, it was nice without dust.

We were almost to Lake City when...

Gah! First flat of the ride!

Of course, it was us Wans. :cry
    Son of a biscuit!

An old-ass rusty nail. :bluduh We always find those things.

    Out came the tarp...

Ceasar was at the ready with his hand-cleaning towels. :lol3
    Thanks, Osito!

Ugh. The puncture was right on the ridges. No patching that one. :fitz

    It didn’t take too long.
Thanks for your patience, guys! :D

    Back on the road.

Lica seemed even more excited than usual...:scratch

Oh, he was on Scott’s SE! :clap
I think he liked it... :hmmmmm

    :lol3

Apparently, we almost lost Osito during the ride into Lake City...
I’m not sure exactly where, but Ceasar came into a turn too hot and went off the edge!

Bartek said he heard a scream...”Osooooooooooo!”
    and
    Osito was gone. :eek1

Luckily, he hit some kind of ledge and didn’t go too far down.
He made it back up and was on the road before Bartek had a heart attack. :knary

    Osito!
    :clap

    :rofl

    Here we are.
    The Silver Spur.

    (old photo)

(Osito’s photo. possibly from the next morning)

We were still pretty full from lunch, so we just got chips and soda from the gas station...
and tequila from the liquor store.

Tequila and 7up. Like poppers, but without the slamming.

Just me and matt and Osito.
The other guys stuck to their Whiskey drinks of choice...:slurp

Scott told us that Doritos burn when you light them on fire. Really?

Of course matt had to try it...

    Yep. They do!

    :hair

How perfect is this wallhanging?? :evil

It’s like they knew we were coming. Put a Bear on it!

    :lol3

Osos like to enjoy their beverages...
so, the group was pretty happy.
    :freaky

Haha, good thing there’s no sound to go with the photos...

Radek, Bartek and Scott had eaten dinner at the Saloon.

(Osito’s photo from the morning. you can see the bikes in the background)

They said it was jumping tonight. :robin

There was some talk of bellydancers?

    What’s that, Osito? :ear

Head over to the saloon? :1drink
    okay...

I know some of these are blurry, but I like ‘em like that.
What happens in Lake City, stays in Lake City...

    Osito was done.

    Buenas noches, Osos!

    :snore

Day 6 is in the books!
Oh yeah. Our numbers were screwed up - Matt and I forgot to clear Norm that morning. :huh

So, corrected mileage was 191 and everything else is wrong. :cry

Casualty list for Day 6 -

    1 flat (first one of the ride) - M & K

1 pr. of trashed rain gear (pants and jacket ) - Bartek.

    Aw, that's not so bad...
    Maybe our luck was changing.

    apparently, osos love pumpkin. :huh
(you don't have to watch the whole thing, just a few seconds)

Haha, that's because I'm brainwashing you guys to expect it. :evil

I was wondering why the Osos were so popular with the local cowgirls in that town.
I think this picture gives away the secret...

They noticed that the Osos had very dexterous paws. Hahha.:killen

Notice this oso just casually holds his pint AND a shot in one hand!
    Clearly an evolutionary advantage.
