pic came up on google, from this guy's klr blog.

    :lol3

I don't think he can feel much through the 840 denier cordura :dunno
he's usually pretty busy, too. :D

    Day 12: 8/12/13
    Moab, UT to ?
    236 miles

We started the day by washing our gear in the tub.

:hmmmmmLooking back, I see that we jinxed ourselves right there.
Clean gear for a long dirt day?
That's like waxing your car before a big date. You're just asking to get pooped on. :nah

It’s not a ride report without a picture of all the crap I keep in my pockets.
I took things seriously this time...Look how little I brought!

(wow, I was super tired when I did the labels last night. and I don't know why it's so huge :huh)

At least the room key and the quarters were staying in Moab. :deal
Gotta stay light for the sand. :lol3

Lica still needed to get his stuff fixed, so I had time to do laundry.
There was a place just up the street.

It was nice. Clean and empty.

The only bad part was the waiting. :ddog
I should have brought a guitar.

Actually, it was easier to walk back to the motel and wait there. :jive
I saw these pretty flowers for Ladybug on my way back.

    Radek'’s new tires. 908 front.

and matching rear. No kissing pic this time. :rofl

    Osos go through the tires!

(no, we didn't leave them there)

Hey, look - Goggles got his peg fixed! :nod
I think he went to the bicycle shop up the street.

And Lica found some new handlebars!
    Here’s Matt, showing them off...

    :lol3

Whoops. the camera was focused on Scott’'s boots.

Oh, look - I did have a clear photo of the KTM tools in the broken bar.

Hey, I think my laundry is done! :jive
    another flower pic for Ladybug...

Now Lica was working on that bent front brake lever.

See that rubber hammer? Lica loves that thing.
He was showing it off, every chance he got. :evil

Good as new. Well, not really. But, for the purposes of this conversation, good enough.

Hey, he fixed his brake pedal, too!
    Duuuude. You’re set. :thumb

    Old bars :cry

    New bars. :D

    And, new hand guards.

We did some work on Bartek's bike, too. :augie

That thing is bulletproof now. :rofl

    hey, where's Radek? :scratch
It turns out, he was off getting a haircut!

Apparently the hairdresser was into him. :toney
He got invited to a hoedown or something.
We'll have to start calling him “LL Cool R” :evil you should watch that video. 80s!

(am I the only one old enough to know that stands for “Ladies Love Cool James Radek”?)

Oh wait, here’s another picture -
Radek is demonstrating how he was going to fight off any attacking mountain lions :turkish
during his 9 hr night hike...
    Vice grips! :lol3

His hair does look nice, though. :D

OK, now we’re ready to go...

    As any good Oso knows,
it's important to get an early start.
Especially on a 230+ mile day.

    12 Noon should work.

    Awesome RR, LittleWan :clap

I was just showing it to my GF, and a picture of Lica came up and she goes "I know that guy!"... apparently they'd crossed paths in South America, right around New Years in Ecuador. She goes on to tell me about how excited and excitable he was when on the bike, which sure lines up with what I've seen in this RR :lol3

    Small world :norton

    Hi huzar!
    That is very, very cool!

Was your GF confused to see him called "Lica"?
She probably met him as "Vasile" in Ecuador. :lol3
(he uses Lica as a nickname sometimes, that's how we were introduced in BC, so that's what I used here).

But, he screams the same, no matter what you call him.

    :clap

Thanks for signing in and saying "hey!"

Heh, I usually take Sat. off, but I tried to do a little RR.
Glad the Rally is working out OK -
yeah, if you don't mind the extra cost - the 908 is fantastic. :deal

    Aw, Ladybug,
I'm always thinking of you! :D

Always thinking of you, too - Lica!

    Day 12: 8/12/13
    Moab to ?
    236 miles, continued.

OK, so we left Moab at noon.
We were back on the TAT now.
    Heading towards Gemini Bridges.

    Lica and Scott

Right around here, a jeep came at us from the other direction.
He was going pretty fast and we freaked each other out. :eekers

Matt tried to signal that there were more bikes behind us,
but who knows if the guy saw...

This rock always looks like an eagle to me.
    Or maybe a vulture? :scratch

Matt was shooting a little video for this section.
It wasn't very interesting, but we did have some sand.
This bit was deep - that's someone else's"Oh shit!" moment you see there. :lol3

(it was bright so the colors are all screwy...)

We had been expecting a loose, rocky, sandy hill climb. (guess it was sandy, not rocky)

It used to really mess people up.
I remember the TAT ride reports from 2009 -
one guy burned out his clutch on this hill and had to U-haul it home.

    But, now...
    Nothing!
The hill has been "fixed" and is just a plain old road. :bluduh
    Boring.

We waited at the top for the guys.
    And, waited.

Matt remembered that fast jeep and we were starting to get worried
Just as we were getting ready to go back,
Scott and Bartek came up and got us. (bartek, don't give me that look! :lol3)

It turned out that Lica had had a flat.

Front flat. He changed it fast. :D

We were just happy that no one had crashed or been hit.

    Flat count -

    Scott - 1 "deflation"
    M + K - 2 rears
    Lica - 1 front

    And, we're moving...

    Back up the hill.
I took a couple pics of the guys hitting that sandy section...

    Ain't no thang. :D
    Here's Lica and Osito.

Unfortunately, we had lost some time and still had a loooong way to go.
    No Gemini Bridges today. :nah
    Sorry, Osos.

I know Bartek likes to see what he missed...
(we waited for him to go look, but he only went to the parking area and then came back)

Here are a few pics I took last time...

    (Sorry, Bartek :cry)

We were back in wagon train mode.
I'm not sure if anyone was really looking at their GPSs,
so we were waiting for the group before making the turn.

We were going towards Green River now...
It was pretty dusty so we had to space out.

The red stuff was a little silty.

There’s the windmill. TAT vets might recognize it.

I was just glad it wasn'’t raining.

    Powerline road.

Making sure this was the right way before tearing off...

Blurry pic of a fast section...

Matt had considered doing the Book Cliffs (from the UTBDR),
but we didn'’t really have time.

    Green River, here we come...

I guess this is the river?

We stopped at Subway to pick up lunch.
It was past feeding time already, some of the Osos may have been hungry.
Our intention was to bring sandwiches to eat under the I-70 bridges...

But it didn'’t look like they were going to wait that long.
I think some of them got extras. :D

I know this one is blurry,
but I just wanted to show what was waiting when we got back on the road...

    It did not look good.

There’s more dirt between Green River and Black Dragon Wash,
but we didn'’t want to take the chance of getting rained out.
We skipped that part of the trail and headed right to BD wash.

    Oh, sh*t.
    It was dumping out there...
Exactly where we wanted to be riding.

Here we are - the turnoff for Black Dragon.

I opened the gate and let the guys in.

Dark on the left, blue on the right...
Let’s hope we see more of the blue skies today...

    Black Dragon, here we come!

Lica got a photo of Radek entering the canyon...

    Lica, from Radek'’s GoPro.

There were some rocks at the entrance. As usual.

I think we went more to the left, Radek went to the right...

    This is looking back...

We stopped at the pictographs near the entrance.

These photos (Radek'’s) give you some sense of scale - this place is huge.

    Some of the pictograph guys.

    Dog-like creature.

I signed the register for the Osos.
As soon as I put that sticker on there, I realized it was a mistake.
I hogged up half the page! Too late to take it off.
Sorry, BLM people, I’m an a-hole. :shog Oh, forgot to add Reno on there, too. D'oh.

Matt was worried that it would be raining when we got to the I-70 bridges,
so we asked the guys if they wanted to eat now.
    They did. :clap :lol3

    My half of the sandwich...

    and, Matt’'s half.

    Bartek and Scott.

    Osito!

    Radek, by Lica

Lica took a couple more photos...

    Osito’'s pic

OK, those skies aren’t getting any clearer - we’d better get going...

I only took a few photos in the wash.

It's always fun, but it's over in a blink.

    Looking back at Bartek.

    Here’'s Larryboy’'s favorite rock! :wave
    (and rider914’'s - where is he?:scratch)

It didn’'t look much different than it did last year.
    Here’s a screenshot from 2012.

That video if you want it.

It was about the same this time.
Nice, but the best part goes by quick.

Looking at my time stamped photos,

    2:41pm
    [IMG]

    2:58pm
    [IMG]

We aren’'t even geared up (or done eating) in the top photo...
So it was a lot less than 17 minutes.

    probably 10.

Good thing, as we still had a ways to go...

    Great report guys.
So good in fact that I have two Ride Reports to do, and I haven't started them yet.

    You guys have the advantage.
Kelly takes lots of pictures, and Matt can make any terrain seem easy.

It's good to see those sections of the TAT again.
Good luck in cat canyon, and I hope the rain does not flood out the wash after the "giant bunny turd" section.
I spent a night camped there because of that happening.

But it was cool. All the frogs came out and sang all night long.

Waiting to see what happens next...

Amazing report. A lot of hard work but worth it. Ive ridden some of this stuff on mountain bike too. Tonnes of fun. So nice to see other 990 riders riding these bikes the way they're meant to be ridden. I think we have the same motto. "If you ain't breakin' shit, you ain't doin' it right!" These bikes are more capable than people give them credit for. Nothing better than showing up at a trail head and people roll their eyes at you because you're on a 990, and then next thing they know, you're waiting for them at the end! Nothing better. Like Radek said, "these are our dirt bikes". Love to ride with you all sometime if the chance arises. I rode with Radek over a decade ago on mountain bikes. Not sure if he remembers, but I totally recognized him on one of your rr's. Let me know if the Oso's are ever recruiting! Cheers.

    Hey Little Wan,
Just wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying your rr, but it has cost me. After seeing what an Adventure is truly capable of I just went out and bought a used 950. It could have been worse. I was just about to buy a brand new 990 when I found a used 950.

I just figured out from the dates in the BLM log book that you were about an hour behind Sharpie and myself in the Black Dragon. I am looking forward to the rest of this day since I know first hand that you are about to run into Biblical downpour. Sharpie and I got caught in it just coming out of Eagle Cny. It gets really spooky out there with lightning bolts cracking all around you and the wash in front of you has just turn into a raging torrent.

We actually made across this one after it went down a bit.

    But not this one

By the way Sharpie is now in the market for an Adventure himself, but don't tell anyone or he may get banished from Caffe Husky.:D

Thanks again for an excellent rr.
