I had to do a little of the old ktm adventure ballet in this water section, a nasty slippery little stick almost had me off. My 04 950 s is as tall as they come and the riders edge re-sprung / valved suspension and tall seat make it even taller. I'm 6'2" and I can only touch tippy toes on flat ground. I stayed dry, but it was close.

We had a rare rest stop before dropping into the death valley area (I think) The Wan's had just had a bit of high side crash in a long and nasty , loose rock section. It was like deep sand but the grains of sand were rocks the size of you fist and very unpredictable. They are one tough team, and Matt has some serious skills on a bike, He could save it when I thought it was going to be a big off with a perfectly timed and very courageous twist of the 990's throttle. It's too bad my gopro battery was toast because you really have to see the Wan's ripping it to believe it.

Hey Wendell - great to see you here!
I noticed these are your very first posts on ADV. :D
Thanks for de-noobing, and taking the time to add your pics!

I agree with Redog1, this photo is awesome!
:rayof Definitely one of Grumpy's best pics from the LAB2V!

We had no idea how close you were to taking a bath! :eek1
    Lucky!

I'll wait and see if Wendell has anything more to add (I was hoping he'd share some of his post-ride dune photos...)
and then I'll be back to chat at you guys later...

What riding is all about some having fun with some buddies, Even if they ride quads.
A couple of my riding buddies, A dairy farmer and a cherry farmer. But they both have the same expression. They really are having fun, it's just how farmers smile.:lol3
And that's not a bud in his hand it's just some trash he was picking up, really!!!:freaky

I forgot my camera in Canada and the cheap WallMart one I bought did not make it through the LAB2V so my Dune photos are limited to the iphone shots. The big KTM wisely stayed in the truck at Glamis. I rode my 2000 Husky 610 which blew up on my last day there. Any one want to buy a gently used husky with a slightly elongated big end rod bearing??:huh [IMG]

But, probably more like this. :cry

    :lol3

Sorry to hear about your Husky!
If you want to remember it in better days, I got a photo when it was waiting for you at Palmdale Supercycles...

Thanks for coming back with some dune pics, Wendell!

:waveAnd all you kind readers out there - thank you for the nice comments!
I'm really glad you're still enjoying the RR.
sorry, I've dropped the ball in replying to everyone...:cry

I haven't been spending too much time on ADV.
With christmas and all, being online was cutting into my knitting time too much.
Now that gift season is almost over, I'm getting caught up.

Hey, have you guys been keeping up on Lica's build thread?
He finished up his rebuild/new paint job and his Oso bike looks great! :clap

    Nice work, Lica!
    and that was fast. :D

I keep forgetting to mention this. I did contact Panasonic, but my warranty on the lumix had expired in January 2013.
They were willing to fix the camera, but it would have been about $180 (including shipping).

    Or, for $20 more ($199), I could buy a new TS-4. :hmmmmm

I went with the new camera (through amazon. it's down to $191 now, the orange ones are cheaper. :D)

I used it on the LAB2V. It's about the same as the TS-3, but with an unscratched lens.
Here's a photo from Red Rock that I haven't used...

    Eh. :dunno

It's a compromise. Tough camera, but not the best photos (not in my hands, at least)
Oh well. I'm okay with it.

Hopefully this one will last longer than the TS-3.
I'm under strict orders to use the lens cleaning brush that came with it...

and NOT my dirty glove. :nono
    :augie

    Thanks, dabneyr!
It was a blast! Have fun if you do it next year! By the way, Matt and I enjoyed your write up about the LAB2V - was that from 2007?

Matt was wondering if the French guy on the black 990 was named Michel?
He met someone fitting that description back in 2007...wonder what Michel's up to. :hmmmmm

Full disclosure - dabneyr used some of the info from this report to do a couple of articles for ADVpulse.
    Thanks, dabneyr!

And, this has nothing to do with anything except that my sister hadn't seen it so I just sent it to her.
    (They go through her neighborhood)
If you haven't seen this video, it's a fun watch for a sunday afternoon.
For moto content, there's some Travis Pastrana around the 6 min. mark...

    OK,
Hope everyone has a Happy New Year! :freaky
Have fun and ride safe in 2014.

Hey Kelly, we met the KTM990 rider in 2008. Maybe he went both years. He was riding with a guy on a triumph. You can see both riders here in this picture...

I don't remember if it was ever talked about during the RR, but I am wondering if any of the Oso Locos use a Rekluse clutch. If so, I would love to hear your opinion on them for the big bikes. Thanks

    hey dabneyr,
Unfortunately it's been too long. Matt would need a helmet-off pic in order to recognize Michel.
    thanks for trying, though!
We'll just leave it at "...maybe..." :D

OK. :huh thanks, I think. :scratch
The "perv" thing threw me, but Matt said they're the "pervs," not us.
    :lol3
I haven't watched them yet, but Matt really liked the Mongolia video.

    thanks for the links!

    Hi Skyclad,

Nope, none of the Osos has a Rekluse.
Matt is still using the original clutch on the 990 (2007), as well as the original clutch on his XR650R (2001). :gdog
So I don't see him changing that any time soon.

I think Osito has ridden a 950 with a Rekluse and he liked it. Said it was smooth.
But he doesn't have one on his bike as far as I know.

Questor has a Rekluse on his SE, and seems to enjoy it.
Maybe he'll sign in and give his 2
    ¢? :ear

Hey, it's been a while, but I see that K_N_Fodder has the Ten Sleep Brewing Co, up and running...

    Congratulations, Justin!

Hopefully, folks will come visit you this summer!

    :beer

This has nothing to do with anything, but while I'm here...
Matt was doing some work on the bike and we took pics of our Black Dog skid plate...

    Man. :eek1
    that thing got worked!

Here's how it looked when it was new:

(the sticker is different, I know. Martha gave Matt a new sticker at the Bend KTM rally :lol3)

But, then again, EVERYTHING on the bike was pretty back then...:tb

    Apparently, we're rough on things...:D

I think the bike had about 13,000 miles in the pretty pics.
Now we're at 40,000. Those were 27K HARD miles. :evil

    Osoooooooooooo!!! :clap

Thought you might get a kick out of this bashed plate miss we saw at the Bend Rally. This guy did not make it to the top of the old lookout post we were on. I did give him some power pars while his bud went back to base camp, for more beers.
To team Ososlow's. :D:D Look how the bash plate did not protect the clutch cover. I think some extra bumber fins fabed out of Dilrin or UHMW would help bounce off the rocks and help keeping your motor liquid tight.
ps...thanks for keeping me entertained this fall while my ACL is on the mend.

    O so slow....get it....har..har:rofl:rofl,,,you two kick asss.

    Hiya DiggerD!

    Ooooh. :uhoh
Yeah, I remember seeing a photo of that poor bike...
Matt was at the rally in Bend (while I was at home, working on a RR) and Questor posted some pics for me...

    :cry

I guess it's hard to protect everything on a bike, isn't it?

You'd have to be like the boy in the plastic bubble...
(oh that doesn't tell you about his bubble. try this one. :D)

    Oops. different bubble boy...

I mean, if they can do it for horses...:dunno

    :lol3

Thanks for the nice words, glad you liked the report!
Hope your ACL is healed up now...
Matt had an ACL reconstruction back in the 90s and I know it's no picnic :(:
