Be careful with boats offering to bring you across the gap you can't find any trip reports about.

Just got this message from Niko:

    "Shoot,

Sorry for such late reply mate! I haven't seen the message somehow...

In short. La Poste is a scam operation. At first I was sincerely hoping it was just a communication problem, both me and the captain (later found out he's no captain) are strong minded people and we got a bit into a discussion. Basically because they were demanding more money for another boat, since their boat was unavailable. That sounded dodgy in the first place and then showed to be true.

I went to great extent to get my money back (unsuccessfully) and in the process I met many more people that have been scammed. 5 more guys plus me and my buddy have been scammed by this guy since the beginning of this year.

I've met a couple who've seen the boat and captain and decided to bail out, because they said it all seemed wrong.

So please, spread the word. I'm terribly frustrated because I can't shut this guy down and he's still scamming people....

    Cheers,
    Niko"

Sorry for the late answer. I was on the boat for a while with no wifi...

We don't recommend other boats since we have no information about how they are maintained. So we can't say if they can get you across safely or if they do the immigration works properly. There have been a few shipwrecks over the last years and some fraud operations. Most of the other boats don't do the proper paperwork for the bike import which causes a lot of trouble once in a while...

Another problem is that most sailboats and catamarans are not allowed to transport bikes because they are too small and not build to carry heavy deckloads. So now hardly any boat does that anymore.
Some try to do it anyway once in a while. That can be dangerous because the sea between Panama and Colombia can be quite "bumpy". And it can cause trouble with the authorities...

I hear some people took the route Turbo (Colombia) via Capurgana and Puerto Obalida to Carti (Panama) or even Colon on local cargo boats. That should work both ways. But you might need a lot of patience and time for that.

As far as I know most people are looking for airfreight or container sharing if they don't take Stahlratte. But I have no detailed information about that.

Try to google "darien gap crossing motorcycle" if you haven't done that already.
Sometimes there are new options I'm not aware of.

I can't vouch for quality, safety or reliability of any of those services!

I hope you find a safe way to cross the gap.
Sorry that we can't take you but the crew needs some change once in a while;)
Have a great trip and good luck,
    Stefan.
