My 2019 ride is approaching. It is time to start a little preparation.
Ride Dates: Dec 1 to Dec 16
Motorcycle: DR 650 or KLR 650
    Mostly dirt roads

This is a shorter ride than previous years. I am also traveling with a group and staying in hotels. This makes the planning infinitely easier.

Will be following; you will be about a month ahead of us (Wife and I, two bikes, in Peru now). Scout out the way!

I can’t believe the amount of route planning you are showing off here. We barely know where we are going next week!

Looks like a great trip. I look forward to following along here.

Remember to take along sufficient crisp, new, unmarked or stained US hundred dollar bills to exchange for Argentinian pesos with bar keeps or the hotel desk. Unless they have gotten their ATMs sorted over on the west side (which I doubt) you will have no access to Argentine money otherwise. Oh, and get rid of their money before you leave as no one else wants to exchange it back to dollars.

    Safe trip!

    T-4:weeks

I'm counting down the weeks till I am riding through Patagonia. A little shopping including new gloves, mosko moto bag, point and shoot camera, Moto Skivees, has kept me occupied the past two weeks.

By way of introductions (and creating test posts from my phone). this is my third "epic" ride. I started riding again three years ago.

I am easing my way to retirement. At 56, I own an IT consulting business. This allows me to take extended time off for riding. My first trip was 6 weeks from Atlanta, GA to California and back. Last year I took 8 weeks to ride to Alaska.

My youngest son is now studying at Clemson University. Out of state tuition is keeping me working a bit longer this year. The trip to Patagonia will be shorter than previous trips at 16 days.

I've been fortunate to travel the world with my profession. I now enjoy the view of the world from a Motorcycle instead from an airplane. While my family enjoys travel, I haven't convinced them to ride along. My favorite style of riding is to ride solo and camp off my Vstrom.

In February riding to Ushuaia, had no problems with ATMs in either Argentina or Chile and none changing money from both countries back to dollars at the airport

PSX_20191127_192037.jpg This is the first time I've started a motorcycle ride from the airport. I miss having all of the bike prep time. I'm watching the coverage regarding the protests in Santiago.

    Riding soon...

FYI - We had no issues getting cash at ATM’s in Argentina, from Bolivia border to Mendoza. This was in past several weeks of travel.

I expect you mean Daniel at MotoPatagonia. Yes. We are a group of four riders (including Daniel).

We have organized our riding today from Puerto Varas. Dave and Jane are a couple from Maine.

We changed money for both Chilean Pesos and Argentinian Pesos here in Puerto Varas. We are prepared for the rural places ahead.

We had a great first day of riding starting with good paved roads along Lago Llanquihue. Road construction along the estuary had sections of mud and fresh gravel. Other sections of dirt roads and newly paved roads completed our travel to Hornopiren

From Hornopiren to Lago Yelxho we had two ferry rides and some pretty amazing scenery. Crossing through a fjord we entered a temperate rain forest. A little jurasic parklike.

We had a light rain most of the day. Most of our riding was on gravel. The last hour or so of riding was a paved road with some nice sweeping curves.

Quite a day of riding.. lots to write about, but will have to come back and edit later.

Started off the day from Lake Yelcho. At Puyuhuapi, a landslide closed the road. Some bikers had stayed over the previous night waiting for the road to be cleared and were planning to do so again. We had a nice lunch. The road opened mid afternoon and Daniel had got the road crew to allow us to be the first through.

We were able to hike to Hanging Glacier.

Finished our ride at Vista Patagonia lodge.

We are now in Cochrane. A few days of good dirt riding. We haven't seen pavement in a long while. The road is dusty.

The road is always changing with construction fairly common. In one spot before Hacienda Tres Lagos, construction closes the road between 1 to 4 pm.

Today we took a fun road and ride the Balsa across the river.

In Argentina... crossed via Paso Robles. A long day of gravel roads. In this area, it is important to know your fuel range and where to buy gas.

In Ushaia. Had a few days of great riding, some crazy weather (snow), a little mud, and a lotta dirt.
