I assembled a small group of expert riders to tackle the much talked about Box Canyon and Coke Ovens. People kept telling me that you can't take a 950 to the Coke Ovens, what do they know! Well we did it and it was probably the hardest ride I've ever done on my 950.

    EPIC!

They were forecasting 103 today, at 6:45AM it was 80.

    Riders today:
    JD - Dirty Dog - KLR 650
    Glenn - KLR 650
    Tom - KTM 990
    Terry - Nightstalker - KTM 950

We were hammer down, pedal to the metal, to get to Box Canyon early. Not too much traffic in this popular ATV/Side-by-side area yet and the temps were still tolerable.

    Enter the Canyon, Glenn.

Box Canyon is relatively easy, with a couple of short rocky sections.

We rode this short ridge line trail. Had to come back down to the main line, looked way worse from the top.

We finished off Box Canyon in short order. It was getting hot, it was time to begin the trek to the Coke Ovens.

The road to Coke Ovens was rocky and steep, up and down and down and up. We would just slide down the rocks and hope to not go over the side.

    JD on an UP.

It really didn't look that far on the map. Are we ever going to get there??

Do you remember me saying something about trying to not slide off the trail? Thank goodness JD has lots of buddies to get him back on the straight and narrow.

Walnut Canyon turnoff. I'll come back to that later.

Finally, the Coke Ovens are within site. There's still some pucker to get though to get there.

    Glenn has found the way.

Once we had our fill of the Coke Ovens, we decided to ride down to the Gila River and see if we could find where the train trestle crosses. JD waded out to see how deep the river was, Glenn decided to wade with his KLR.

Water this deep gives me uncomfortable flashbacks to my first PB500.

    Almost there.

Very nice report and super pictures. I can see why there may have been a few tense moments on your 950. Thanks for sharing.

Tom and I, being both older and wiser, considered our checkbook balance and calculated the cost of a KTM V-Twin motor rebuild, which I have first hand knowledge of the amount, and decided against the river crossing.

Glenn and JD, already across, really didn't want to cross again, and really didn't want to go back the way we came in. I didn't relish the idea of the return trip either. So, we split into two groups, those on the south side of the Gila, and those on the north.

Heading back towards the Coke Ovens.

Tom and I took the Walnut Canyon split, it certainly couldn't be any worse than the way we came in, could it?

The first few miles were just as terrible as the route back to Box Canyon. Oh boy! To make things more interesting, my clutch decided to give up the ghost as well. Clutches?? We don't need no stinking clutches!

It was SO DAMN HOT!! We found a gully and hid under a bush for a while in an attempt to cool down and regain some energy. We still had miles of unknown trail to cover to get back out to the highway.

Still exhausted, we continued on. Luckily, the trail eased up.

We passed through some spectacular country. If I had a clutch, I would have stopped to take more pictures. Maybe next time...
