The heavens opened and dumped 4 inches of rain in the Valley of the Sun this week with feet of snow crippling the high country.

Being hydrophobic, I am deathly afraid of water, but I scheduled a ride to survey the carnage in the back country. We found the desert to be much more resilient than the urban sprawl called Phoenix.

I posted a ride through mud, deep stream crossings, and mud. I suggested small bikes for this ride and CrashDBad brought his 950 SE, his only bike. Tom P and Nightstalker were riding Honda CRF 450X bikes, perfectly matched for the riding conditions we would find on this day.

Of course, we met at McDonald's, and made haste for the Wildcat OHV area in the Cave Creek Ranger District of the Tonto National Forest, only to find this...

DOH!! We're only a half mile from the staging area! Plan B, we'll come in from the other end. What a great start to the day!

    First elevation challenge! Going up.

The coarse rock face afforded excellent traction.

We were on an excellent trail, which according to the map, should take us to the raging fury of Camp Creek, full from torrential downpours.

    CrashDBad

Camp Creek below. Suprisingly deprived of water??

We should go down for a closer look...

If you have a fear of heights, you may want to select a different trail.

I'm sure it wasn't this bad before the rains...

With the disappointment of Camp Creek, we made a run for Horseshoe Dam with higher hopes.

I guess they call him CrashDBad for a reason.

First major water obstacle of the day.

The bottleneck. The water was shallow, the quicksand beneath it was DEEP!

Tom found a way through and we followed.

Horseshow Dam. Can you believe that on Thursday, this was releasing 25,000 CFM of water. Only a trickle coming out today.

Horseshoe lake still has a long way to fill.

    Deep sand, slow turns, CrashDBad.

Stuck in a ditch. I don't even know how he got his bike turned sideways.

CrashDBad makes his own single track.

The parking area was sparse. These guys ran the baricade, wish I had the balls to have done that this morning...

CrashDBad took off on the blacktop after twisting his knee in the sand. Tom and I had to get back to our trucks. I promised to make it interesting!

I found the coolest single track!

When you see this on the trail, hold your breath...you got to pin it to win it!!!

What a great day of fun riding. I DIG that pic of your wheelie over the puddle. Big air on that wheelie! Woo Hoo. Had a blast and now I'm tired. Thanks for the good time. Can't wait for the next adventure.

4 inches of rain! That's about half your annual total, right?

    Nice photos, looks like fun.
