I put a little ride together today. The invite went a little something like this:

"Expect nearly impassible trails. Not for the faint at heart. If you haven't broken parts off your bike yet, this would be a great opportunity to get started."

So even with a disclaimer like that, a few volunteers showed up to follow me into certain peril!

    4Play - Honda XR650R
    DOD - KTM 525 MXC
    Toonces - Yamaha WR450F
    Nightstalker - KTM 950 ADV

My buddy Dave showed up and pretened to be there for the ride, but no one was buying that story.

We didn't have to go far to find a hill that would give us some trouble. This hill was insanely steep!!!

    4Play first attempt.

    Toonces makes it look easy!

    DOD makes it look HARD!

    No worries, DOD is OK!

With 3 of us on the top, we waved DOD on to meet us where the trail connected back up to the main road, where-ever that may be.

We traveled along the ridge for a way and then started dropping down, down, down. We got to this one section of trail that I named POINT OF NO RETURN ONE. It was a pretty hairy waterfall drop in the wash. 4Play was sure we could get back up it if need be, so we continued on.

Welcome to POINT OF NO RETURN TWO.

I hiked down the trail a bit to see if it got any better [yeah right] which it didn't. After a lot of effort, we got the bikes turned around and made our way back to POINT OF NO RETURN ONE. Did I mention that my 950 was burping and sputtering today? And that I had agreed not to take it anywhere we couldn't easily escape from...

4Play checking out the "line" on PONR 1.

Toonces - Help on the way.

OK, maybe there's a better line.

The 3 of us walked 4Play's XR up the waterfall. One bike up, two to go! Did I mention that we're riding in Phoenix, where it was already probably 100 degrees! The heat was draining our energy reserves.

    Toonces zips right up!

Nightstalker is next, rare video action of the beast in the wild! Oh yes, that's the ground shaking all right!

Toonces ripped the bottom of his boot off. It would be the first of many trail side repairs.

Continuing north from Tip Top, we passed a ranch, where a donkey ran out of a shed and nearly took us out!! Undeterred, we pushed on to Packer http://www.apcrp.org/PACKER/PACKER_071707.htm

Along the way, steep washed out climbs.

As we pulled into the crossroads of Packer, a strong gas smell was coming from my bike. I looked down at my right tank and sure enough, gas was BLOWING out the vent. I popped the tank cap and a wave of gas poured out over me and the bike. My comrades were a little nervous.

It's actually a known problem with the 950 twin tanks. Especially in hot climates. I used my own siphon hose to manually equalize the tanks.

We had a great time playing around at the Milk Ranch. We decided to turn back the way we came, the alternative was much too nasty in this heat.

Turn on the key, hit the start button, and all power disappears. WTF!! Battery connection?? Sure enough it was.

I stopped to take a picture and fell, right into that cactus, ouch.

Really, going down is easier than up!

Great report Terry, thanks for the tour.

Note to self: Anything over 104 degrees is too friggin hot for adventure riding.

Great pics and vids. Just my kind of trails to ride on. Good guys to ride with. Fantastic vistas. Practically no traffic. Nice Burro.:eek1 Got to ride a KTM 520 (I’m still twitching with excitement).:wings Fell over twice and only crashed once. My 6 year old pair of O’Neal boots couldn’t take any more punishment and were officially laid to rest on this ride. Thanks guys for looking out for silly ass.
