I moved to Arizona nearly two years ago now and the riding is just amazing!! On every ride I go someplace new! There are some places I've been scoping out that I was reluctant to take the 950 (those who have ridden with me will find this amusing), but now I have a 450 as well, so it's time to boldly go...

I laid out a whole day of dirt riding and recruited Javalina to drag out his, new to him, Honda XR650R. He installed a 7 gallon tank the night before the ride, he would need it!

Note: He does have a license plate at the start of the ride...

We had a bumpy start to the day. I had forgot my knee and elbow pads and neither of us had checked out tire air pressures, which we really should have done. The gas station was only 5 miles away, so off we went.

Might as well top off the oil while we were here.

Now we're ready to go. Off to the first trail. I was expecting to see more of this today, CLOSED TO MOTORIZED VEHICLES! DAMN!

Being the master ride planner that I am, contingency plans were in place. We actually found some water.

I am all about GPS. This road was on the map, thank goodness we had an electronic route to follow.

This looks nasty, but it wasn't too bad.

We popped out on a real road, "New Windmill" was a checkpoint to verify the route.

The trail disappeared at this tank, "Pipe Tank" according to the map.

On to the first mine stop on the tour. "Brooklyn Mine". Wasn't too tough to get the little bikes down to the mine. Doable on a big bike for an experienced rider with knobby tires.

    Well, with water in it!!

A lot of trails in the area to explore.

The trail was taking us west, towards Black Canyon City.

Trail to mine #2 on today's tour. Not big bike friendly. Marginally little bike friendly.

    It's a 600 foot drop in a little more than 1/2 mile!!

On the map, this road takes you to the edge of the mesa overlooking Black Canyon City. We were getting close...

    Almost there...

We made it!! Thumb Butte in the foreground.

We turned back to the petroglyphs, the mesa narrows to about 100 yards wide at this point.

Javalina rode right over this petroglyph and didn't even see it!!

A short loop road to the petroglyphs and indian ruins.

The indian ruins were expansive. Probably the remains of about 50-80 rooms.

Pottery shards covered the ground everywhere. We climbed down the side of the mesa to view the petroglyphs.

There's no shortage of rock art at this site.

Satisfied with our archeological review of the site, we mounted up and rode east into parts unknown.

While we were at the Brooklyn Mine, we could see these cool switchbacks running up the mountain to the east. Javalina said that it would be cool to ride up that. He didn't know at the time that we'd be climbing those switchbacks on this part of the ride.

We were back the trail to the switchbacks pretty far when we came up on a Jeep backing down the trail. He had come to a point where he couldn't continue, but perhaps a bike could...of course a bike could!!

There were a number of tough wash outs to cross on this trail. This one was especially difficult.

Trail was rocky at spots. Glad I'm on the little bike.

This was an interesting trail marker.

I stopped at this point and looked at the GPS, we had missed a turn. This road wasn't even on the topo! It was getting late and my instinct for self preservation started over riding my yearning for adventure. Plan the ride, ride the plan, we turned back in search of the missed turn.

We found it! Apart from the trail marker excluding motorized vehicles, there really wasn't any distinct trail to follow.

Time to backtrack to Bloody Basin road, there was a lot of tough trail to cover before dark. To be fair, we did pass this sign about a mile before we turned around.

You come across the oddest things in the desert! No one was around.

One last gasp, we decided to run the FS 44 loop before calling it quits.
