3.5 hours to cover 14.7 miles, in first gear.

How do you get riders to volunteer for this kind of abuse? Promise them punch and pie!

3 of us met at, where else, McDonalds, and after a bacon-egg-and-chees biscuit and some apple pies, we headed off for some bike fuel.

    So that's:

    Javalina - KLR650
    Kyron "SWEEP" - XR650L
    Nightstalker - KTM950A

On the way we picked up Skaife on his BMW 650 X Challenge.

The ride out of Cave Creek up Seven Springs Road was pretty uneventful this try (NO ICE!), as was the initial trek west on Table Mesa Road. We turned south on to NF17, which starts innocently enough.

And then we got to this very simple sign, which was suspiciously free of gunshot holes. Reset odometer and start the timer, we are in for a long and bumpy ride.

    Insert dramatic pause...

    Please continue.

Did I mention that it was up a hill?

Apparently, when I crashed, Skaife and Javalina lost the much needed momentum to climb insanely rocky and steep roads.

Javalina still has plenty of energy.

There may have been some rocks.

The rescue team returns to the bikes. It was a long walk back up that hill.

    And for reference.

Now that we're on the top of the mesa, things should be a piece of cake...NOT!

    SWEEP

OK, it's been a week since it's rained. What's with all the mud?

    Skaife doesn't care.

    Javalina doesn't care either.

And what would be the driving force to plough through this seemingly featureless landscape? Why the view of course!

SWEEP went on ahead and did some trail scouting. He returned to report that the about a mile down the road, there was a split and one leg looked well used. Perhaps that could be an alternate way out, we could avoid that darn hill. One word, unlikely. Regardless, we pressed on.

Arriving at the split, this was option A (ironically, this is also the route I had laid out on the GPS).

And option B. We chose option B.

B descended for a ways and pretty much ended at this water hole.

    OK, where's the parking valet?

SWEEP thought we should check out this drainage. Maybe we could get down it. Right...

We hiked down for a better view. No way out.

We probably could have ridden down.

Out of nowhere, I get hit by this balloon string that knocks me clear on my ass.

Javalina found a lucky Prada horseshoe.

He tossed it over his should for good luck.

It was time to turn around and head back. No one was particularly thrilled at the idea, but none the less. On a positive note, it's a good time to take more pictures!!

    No, not yet.

Hasn't that mud dried up yet?

We reached the hill, and there was some premature rejoicing. At least we knew that salvation lie at the bottom.

    First down, Javalina.

Skaife with SWEEP close by for technical support.

    Hey, he's OK!

    My turn.

Relieved to be at the bottom, 3.5 hours and 14.7 miles later. It was like an enduro test section for big bikes.

Skaife had some other matters to attend to and left just the three of us to carry on.

We did some more scouting in the immediate area.

SWEEP is a maniac on that XR, must be those new Kenda tires.

One last downhill before we move on (it was much more exciting going up, but I didn't get any pictures of that).

We moved on, in search of the Upper Ranch.

    Hoodoo's on the way.

4.5 miles and 20 minutes later, we reached the end. Dammit I hate when the maps are right.

We stopped to check out this cabin near the end. It was kind of scary.
