Any one interested in heading to the pikes peak hillclimb in colorado next july. I know it's early, but the event is fantastic and the ride up is quite an experience. all kinds of classes of vehicle race including semis (see pic) and the bikes, who race 5 at a time and dice all the way up

I rode down in 1998 on my dr650 and would love to do it again on the V-Strom.

feel free to email or pm me if you are interested and I will start a file to organize a bit.

hey hardcore - it's USA - bigger is better !!

can you imagine the view out of that cab when hurtling around those guardrail-less corners ???:eek2 :eek2

the other classes such as american v8 sport racers & the rally cars are great to watch.

the event is held every July 4th weekend so the weather is usually ok. If you book early enough, accomodation in Manitou Springs or Colorado Springs shouldn't be a problem

maybe this will grab your attention

pikes peak course start at around 9000' - negotiate 156 turns - no guardrails - 12 .42 miles to 14,110 feet

record held by Rod Millen of New Zealand in Toyota Tacoma bodied rally/funny car -1950 lbs 2.1 litre turbo 4cyl - approx 800 hp & all wheel drive

record stands at 10 minutes 2 seconds - = approx average speed of almost 80mph while handling 13 turns per minute

Rod's trap speed on the straight when we went in 1998 was 135 mph - UPHILL !!!!

I need to see this again - badly:super :super :thumb :eek1

How often do competitors crash over the side to their death?

It's one of the rides everyone should try and find the time to do. The views are expansive.

sounds like something to coordinate with the paonia rally or some other rally in a nearby state.

dr650bc, I might be interested. I live less than 150 mi. from Pikes Peak. I've been there several times before, but not recently. I need to see it again, too. PM me if you are serious about making plans.

I was gonna run up to Pikes Peak with DukeGirl when she was out here a couple weeks ago...but the bastards closed the gates down early (at 3pm). Damn I hate when they switch the time back from summertime.
BTW...the road fees are now $35 a car, or $10 bucks a person.

:yikes That's a lot. But if any of the $ goes to preserving it, I'll pay it. This summer it was the first time I went to the top of Mt. Evans in about 15 yrs. Instead of being free, they now they charge $10 to get to the summit. But the road is smooth and newly paved. I saw more wildlife and scenery than I did through a crowded Rocky Mtn. Park. Please tell me they are doing good things with the $.

The highway to the top of the 14,110-foot mountain is a private toll road; you will pay the fee at the bottom. There’s a $10 charge per adult, or $35 per carload; children are free. The road is paved for the first six miles; well-maintained gravel rounds out the remaining 13 miles. There are no guardrails along the route. Visit the Web site, www.pikespeakcolorado.com, or call 1-800-318-9505 for more information.

I saw this thing break the land speed record at Bonneville this summer. 285mph(I think). Twin Detroit Diesels...awesome.
