    Joel Wisman did some detailed measurements ... which I jotted down, but I can no longer find his post ...

    The 400W is max. output at something around 4K rpm or better...
    At idle the system puts out ~240W
    The baseline power consumed by the bike with low-beam headlight is ~150W

    So at idle you have less than 100W available for extras...
    Blasting down the freeway you have more .........
    I think Joel figured about 140W would be safe ...
    On the Powerlet website they say you should not have more than 105W but they don't reveal the calculations behind this number ...

    I think most of the heated liner controllers do as you suggested and if you set your 100W heated vest at 50%-heat it does not run at 50W it runs at 100W at a 50% duty cycle... ON then OFF then ON....

    If you really have 140W of extra load you are somewhat close to "the edge" from what I've read ....

    The older R/R regulated voltages in the 13.7V range, at some point in I think 2010 BMW moved to a different R/R (if you take it off you can read the part number on the back) the new one is:

    OK, change my vote to a stator failure at 45,000 miles.

    Came down to Calif to get my bike out of storage with my Multi-Meter in tow.

    Not only did each of the stator wires show some resistence when tested to the frame, one of the coils was completely dead . . . 4vAC.

    Dealer confirmed and is proceeding with doing the replacement along with the regulator.

    They are still bitching about the the Lithium battery and claiming that they cause stators and regulators to fail. That's just pure bullshit - I think they are just trying to sell me a new battery.

    I have a 2010 800GS and the alternator failed at 40,400 miles when I was deep in Baja, over 600 miles from the border.

    I have none of the electric devices accessories you mentioned above and still the alternator/stator failed in the least favorable place, 1000 miles away from home and 600 miles away from the border.

    The way the OEM Regulator/Rectifier is designed (shunt), the stator is forced to work at maximum output regardless of the actual electrical load placed on the system.

    Update to the post below: The new Electrosport stator failed at 30,780 miles, just under 10,000 miles after purchase. Fortunately it failed under warranty, and Electrosport made good on the warranty immediately; I received the new stator 7 days after mailing off the bad one.

    Did not ask for a failure report, but based on the appearance of the stator it was the usual - overheating leading to a short. Fortunately I was prepared, having installed a voltmeter after the stock stator failed, and caught this one after the first pair shorted, thus being able to deal with the problem in the comfort of my own garage.

    However, this seems to reinforce the basic analysis: you cannot put a stator rated to 220 degrees C in a location that achieves 300 degrees C and expect to achieve long term reliability. What I still don't have confidence in, is that BMW's $1200 fix solves that problem, or merely defers it for a while longer.

    You'd think the guys in Germany would have a few bikes instrumented up with thermocouples and have this all figured out, but ... like you I'm not sure if they do...

    It would be nice to know what difference in temperature the ventilated flywheel drives but ... it would take more free time than I've got to make it happen...... :cry

    first failure at 50K miles. stator only replaced

    second failure at 105K miles. replaced with new style stator/rotor.
    Repair P&L $1300

    Mean miles to failure 50K.

    BMW customer service rep no help.

    caveat emptor.

    50K miles from a alternator working at 100% the whole time? Twice.

    Mine just crapped out on me after 55000 KM this week-end.

    Not too bad to have it last that long.

    Did not happen in the best place possible but all in all, not to bad either.

    gotten the bike back home now waiting for the replacement stator.

    I have already voted, so I cant change, but no failure so far(touch wood), and the bike now has 109,700 ks (68,136miles).
    I have an electrical voltmeter fitted, and it always sits on 14.3V, when the engine is running.
    Under maximum load,(heated grips on high, heated inner gloves and jacket on max, and with high beam and 2 x4leds driving lights on, the voltmeter dips to 13.3V.

    BTW My BM mechanic BM Motorcycles in Ringwood, Victoria, OZ, have sourced an auto electrican who can rewind them, changeover price is around the $330Aus.

    I think I may pre-empt a possible failure and get my stator rewired, as it seems that I'm the only one in the poll who has over 100,000ks/60,000ms.

    I'm nearing 80,000km and I think the symptoms are appearing. Might have to replace it very soon. Not too bad for the first occurrence I guess.

    First of all I don't know if there is a 3d for presentation where is needed to write first, in case I'm sorry but I don't find it

    I read your forum occasionally because is a bible for me, full of information and technical guide

    Honestly I'm not an Adventurer, I don't have an ADV bike and Unfortunately for now not big travels around the world but I hope to do..

    I Have an F800 ST '07 47k Km and I share with you the Generator Failure ADV!! :D

    I learn a lot reading this 3d and now I decide to write to make a question

    I read someone re-wrap the coils of the stator, I'm interested to do this too
    But if possible I need some information more about how the wire are winded and crossed. N° of turns and where the wire come and goes from a coil to the next one..
    and the wire diameter if you know..
