I find myself doing projects by myself where I need to lift heavy items out in different areas.

It cannot be something that is attached to the truck
A come along wont work either as I dont always have an anchor point above me

What kind of portable lift system do you recommend?

Depends on the access, angles, and floor space.

Do you have enough space for a rolling gantry?

    Would an engine lift work?

I've used both and each works in some situations that the other won't.

EDIT: I built a gantry for a project. It wasn't a rolling gantry.

I like the idea of a gantry but I need this for mobile work

this is something that I need to use out in the field and be truck deployable
it would be great if it had some decent tires on it so I can roll it around in varying terrain

An engine lift would work in some situations but not in others, as I have to lift items off of a much higher level then what an engine hoist is capable of

There is a type of gantry that attaches to a receiver tow hitch. It has two other legs. Don't remember where I saw it.

I've also built tripods and attached a chain hoist at the top. Could be made to fold. It's more compact and lighter than a gantry, but limits the length it can span.

That is like the item I saw, except that there were two stabilizer legs on what would be the drivers side of the upright to stabilize fore/aft movement.
