    Thanks Tex!

I kinda wish I was still out there. Poor Skelly sits lonely waiting for new tires and chain plus a few other maintenance items. In the meantime I'm renovating a house and have only ridden twice since I got back to real life. I am hopeful I will have time to get the DR in top shape again so I can attend the HU meeting in Nakusp this August.

Thanks for reading the RR, I'm glad you enjoyed it :D

    Hi Dave.

Leaving Edmonton in September to do a very similar trip and I just can't decide on jacket. I've got a Klim jacket now but need to change sizes anyways so I'm still trying to pick the perfect one.

Do you think a mesh/airflow jacket would be a good choice for the climates you go through?

I have the new Adventure Rally by Klim and I find it hot even here in Alberta on some days. I'm thinking I'll be dreading the deadly hot and humid days along the way and something like the Adventure Rally Air with a separate rain over jacket is a better idea.
What are your thoughts about that for the weather you saw during the trip?

    Thanks,
    Chris

I think a mesh type jacket would be fine. However you will need a very good warm layer or two and a way to block wind. There were times I was riding in 2 degrees and sleet. I cursed having the heavy jacket in Central America but was glad I had it in South America.

Awesome, that's what I was thinking, a good shell for the exterior and layering underneath will be key, and it will make the hot climates much more bearable.

My plan is to continue on the trip and keep going north into Brazil, eventually through Venezuela on the way back North. I figure I'll be in hot temperatures more than I will be in cold this way and want to plan for it. Obviously the mountains and the southern section of South America will be the coldest weather to deal with so as long as I plan for a couple cold sections.

Thanks for the reply, followed your RR a lot and the detailed write up at the end with money/day in each specific country was fantastic help.
Hopefully Vancouver island weather is treating you better than St. Albert, I'm sure it will be 10x better come December and the -40°C temps here.

There won't be any -40 here. I will accept -20 and lots of snow But no colder.....and no warmer then -7. Don't want my snow melting.

Sounds like the winters I was used to growing up in Ontario.
The occasional -25 to freeze your nose hairs together but I couldn't have imagined -40 or worse with windchill. Snow, oh yes, there was lots of that.

I used to hate the winters here for awhile. Then I started sledding. Winters are ok now :clap And now that I moved out of Edmonton and to the north a bit I can sled from my garage.

I'm really excited to be able to say that the fundraising effort has been a success! :clap:freaky

Today I had the opportunity to see the ReWalk in Action. The charity that I was working with was able to purchase a ReWalk unit and lease it to the University of Alberta. Today they unveiled it and what a thrill!

Thanks to everybody who supported me during my ride!!

Great to see that, Dave. Congratulations on putting a big slice of the pie together. I hope dozens of paraplegics are using that device in 10 years time. :clap

    Hi Dave,

Just spent the entire morning reading your trip report all over again! Reason being is that I picked up a DR650 and wanted to see what kind of mechanical issues and upgrades you had on your bike. Glad to see that you only had very minimal issues! Oh btw, I got engaged in Victoria! Great city!

Remarkable narration, spectacular photos and videos and most of all understated but unmistakebly relentless passion towards your goal of riding for your brother-in-law. Absolutely moving from start to finish!
Thanks for taking all of us along on an adventure for the ages!:clap

A year later and your RR is still providing inspiration and good information to those of us hoping to follow your lead.
I know writing a report from the road has got to be tough sometimes - no internet, poor internet, and mostly TIME. But, your efforts are greatly appreciated. Thanks especially for posting the cost totals. That helps tremendously for planning efforts.
It sounds like you wedged this trip in between a move/job change. I'm too entrenched to change jobs and my company is pushing back on my request for a 6 month sabbatical. There are too many unknowns to put off a journey like yours until retirement. Here's to making it happen.
    Cheers.

I'm slowly working my way through all the photos and video. I hope I can get it all together for some sort of presentation someday.

Thanks for following along. Having people interested and commenting helped tremendously to keep me going with the updates.

It seems like it never happened...then I start looking at the photos and video and just grin like a mad man. I wish I was doing it again. Thanks for your kind words.

Good question! I see that the photos are ok in the early posts but not in the later ones. I'll have to do some investigating.
Thanks for noticing and letting me know

I am not a computer guy. The new forum is BB, the old was html.
Ask/check in the ask Baldy forum.
Look at the last page of advFord's RR, as he stated the Mods will fix it.

I'm headed out on a similar DR650, on a similar trip roughly a year from now, and I'm from Lloydminster. Was enjoying your RR and was disappointed to see the photos disappear!
