What's the deal with that sort of situation? A non-owner can make a claim on tagged vehicles?

sure, tow company can tow and impound, and it could become an abandoned vehicle. thats how quite a few of the vehicles end up at auction. anybody can apply for abandoned vehicle ownership.

Once you apply for the abandoned title, MVD sends a letter to the last registered owner, if no reply in 90 days it could be yours. Don’t put too much money onto it, I don’t think they have to Pay you back anything if they claim it. A tow company can hold it (debatable), you can’t for sure until you have a title.

It is really a bigger part of the tow company's business than towing, storage fees title aquisitions etc...... That said call any of them.

Was a member of now-defunct South-West Dual Sport Riders of east side fame. Used him once to get a Jeep off a CK trail, the jeep had broken axel & was in a precarious position. Brought it back to civilization at 4 am in the morning. WORD to the wise, He ain't cheap but he's the Best to recover your vehicle when you do stupid shit.
I like the dude because he used to be a member of the IDF in Israel.

Thats what I thought, but its in good shape, rolled and locked.
id bet you need some paperwork to legal retrieve and impound.
Stays out there much longer itll attract bullet holes and rust.

Just want to say Hi to everyone. My wife and I just closed on a home in Prescott and we haven't even seen it in person because of Covid. I can't wait to get to know fellow riders in the area. I grew up in Tucson moved to NY for twenty years of work and now we are retiring to Prescott. I am going to start to follow this thread.

Why not get a couple of Jeep buddies With tow equipment and try to recover it yourself? It’d be a fun adventure even if you didn’t end up with it.

Best way is to get the abandoned title first, then it’s yours. The Sheriffs Office probably won’t authorize a tow unless they have an agreement with the Forest Service. They don’t want to be on the hook for a tow when they don’t need the vehicle. I am not sure if Yavapai County SO has this agreement, Coconino County does. They get reimbursed by the Forest Service to tow out trashed vehicles. It’s a small fund and when it’s out, it’s out for the year.

Welcome to "the green valley", the Verde Valley is the perfect place to launch rides into your choice of three US national forests ---Coconino,--Tonto, Prescott---& actually five if you include Kaibab & Apache-Sitgreaves. All well within a days ride, all four compass points yours too explore.
