I Was wondering if anyone rides with passenger seat off. Is there an after market plate to use instead of passenger seat and what keeps the rider seat locked in. Thanks in advance.

I only ride without the seat and have made my own plate to cover the tool box. But, there are original BMW covers avalible with lock funktion.

I do all the time. There are lots of options (at least there used to be;-). In stock configuration, the OEM tool tray cover is fine not having a seat over it. There is a little “plug” that covers the hole where the latch goes. I have replaced the oem plastic cover with a Rugged Roads version. Cleaner and locks. I also have a Hepco Becker Pillion Cargo Basket that mounts in place of the pillion seat. It is usually on when I’m without a passenger.
The rider seat is locked in place by the same lock bar as the pillion but an additional latch.

To the OP You need part number 5 to slide into the oem cover then it can be locked down instead of the passenger seat. Part 5 is stored in the tool tray. You may have it.

I bought my 02 1150gs and took the rear seat off and have never put back on. The bike came with a plastic cover that locks into place, that isn’t as nice as some of the after market plates, but work well enough. As others have said, the front seat locks In independently from the pillion seat.

The problem with the aftermarket covers is that they still hinge on that plastic tool tray at the front

I'd like to remove the stock tool tray completely and put a tool bag in there

And just cut an aluminum plate to cover the whole area and use Dzus fasteners or similar

Yep. I ended up with the rugged roads because the plastic hinge broke on mine. I was able to source an intact tray and added the Rugged Roads.

Best Rest used to make a tool tube option. They were pricey and had water/mud ingress issues.

Otherwise we are left to one-off custom solutions.

In truth, I have had zero issues since adding the Rugged Roads cover. I haven’t really tried to do much since.

That's the same one I have.
Did you drill out some of the basket to fit the fuel can? Or how did you mount it?

Anywhere to still get that basket? Or do I just have to get lucky in flea market?

As others have noted, the rear seat can be left off. I'm happy with my Touratech Tail Rack Bag specifically for the R1100/1150 GS. Straps go through the existing slots on the rear rack. Fairly easy to remove if need be. Picture shows my '00 in day-trippin' trim. IMGP0016-crop.jpg

They don't make them any more. They show up from time-to-time in the FM. I bought a set of wheels from a guy that was also selling one. Hadn't ever seen it before and was like "Do I really need it?" By the time I decided I did he had already sold it. Next time one came up I jumped on it.

I got lucky in the FM. It is a hefty piece too, very stout.

I never ride with the seat unless my wife comes along, maybe once a year lol. I scored a bmw tailbag that I love and is on all the time. IMG_3025.jpg

I ride with my passenger seat because I have a Russell Day Long and the backrest is fitted into the passenger seat.
