I rode the GS from Salmon, Idaho over Lost Trail Pass and Chief Joseph Pass into the Big Hole (Montana) yesterday. The weather was great and it was nice to ride.

    Information gathered:

    - The Idaho side of Lost Trail Pass is pretty rough (for pavement). There are pot holes, sand and snow-melt water. 53 degrees at noon.
    - Snow depth at the top looks to be about 4 feet deep so the upper mountain roads/trails will not be open for a while.
    - Wisdom is wonderfully lost in time, as always. Had a nice cup of coffee at the Hook and Horn. The gas station sold and seems to have been spruced up by the new owners. Glad to see fuel service continuing.
    - Had lunch on the porch at Rosie's in Jackson, MT. The food is simple there, but always good. The owners are old-world friendly. Refreshing in today's world.
    - The Jackson Hot Springs was closed with a sign saying it will open May 2nd. I got some intel from the locals (very small town...everyone knows everything...really). The resort sold and the new owners are apparently putting some money into it and working to do a refresh. The pool is operational. The restaurant was leased out to someone from Wisdom but no info on the menu or quality.

The big hole is a cool place. It is a nice ride to get started before the dirt is available in the area.

    See you on the trail...

    Update Aug. 18...

Traveled from Salmon, Idaho north over Lost Trail Pass into the big hole today. My route was north out of Salmon, east on 43 into Montana, through Wisdom, NE to Wise River, S through Polaris and to Jackson Hot Springs.

    Highlights:

    - Highway 93 from North Fork, ID over Lost Trail Pass to Lolo has been re-paved and is fabulous. The road was pretty rough and is now perfect.
    - Jackson Hot Springs is now open with new owners. It is neat, tidy, rustic and friendly. It looks like some improvements have been made by the new owners. The restaurant is open with a simple menu but great service. The pool is warm and relaxing after a ride.

So, Highway 93 north out of Salmon is now an “A Grade” ride, the hot springs are open and the big hole is still authentically cool.
