I saw that overpass last time I was out that way and thought what a huge expense for one corner on a road with little traffic. Maybe the plan is to reduce overall traffic, but mainly truck traffic over 299?

Is this an old pid or recent? Maybe the one I'm thinking is already done?

I think maybe they have to spend the money or they lose it. 36 will still be 80% corners of all sorts and will still suck for big truck traffic, even for an every day driver in a car it takes for ever and a day to get to the coast on 36. I dont think fixing little bits of it is going to do the trick. A huge project of fixing and re-alignment of 162 was done years back and the road has been collapsing and sliding off the hills ever since. Its not a simple thing to go in and re-make a road.

That big volcanic plug looking thing is Mad River Rock? Its on someone's ranch/private property right? I see a gate and a road off FH7 that looks to be the big ranch out there.

Ive ridden the dirt road that goes closer to the rock from the opposite side that FH7 goes by it. Off of M4 I think, been a while.

Used to be a fire lookout. The old access stairway up the rock has long vanished though.
There is a 'USFS public' road that goes right behind the rock... the USFS 'main' road comes off Hwy 36...
and ends up over by Ruth Lake, (Ruth/Zenia cutoff).

Think there is also a jeep road that connects, comes off Van Duzen road.
That's one of my 'old deer hunting' country. May go up there and visit this summer.

This all seems like a good place to spend a few days camped by the river and going all over this ......

I was thinking that last Thursday, there are SO many roads zipping off of 36 that I havent investigated. Dinsmore has gas and some kind of food I think.

IMHO: Free camping at Scott Flat. Pit toilets. Carry your own water or boil water from the river.

    A favorite camping spot.

Yup. Grocery at Dinsmore... maybe has some marginal hot food inside. (Haven't been in the store in awhile.)

Mad River Burger Bar has some pretty good stuff. (Downtown Mad River).
Might be open now, but sometimes it take's them awhile to cook tho... especially in the summer.

White Stump 'Barbeque' on the road to Ruth. Pretty good stuff. Dunno about being open now tho.

'Journeys End' Ruth... and the Ruth store too.

And of course... the Kettenpom store.

More roads than gas. The thing to do would be pull your bike out there with a trailer loaded with gas. trying to explore each road takes up days. Like TZ says the deer hunters know those backroads better than anybody. It is a good time to ride them during deer season because if you get in trouble they may be your only hope. The pot growers tear down the road signs to confuse law enforcement.

BTW: If you haven't been there... go down into Hell's Gate.
About 100 yards (or so) west of the road to the Hell's Gate campground... is an old gravel road.
Park on that (or park elsewhere) a short walk... and scramble down the trail to Hells Gate.

It is pretty impressive, a deep hidden gorge with massive rocks and mega pools.
