For years I've seen pictures and read stories about the Rubicon Trail. It's a difficult trail, near California's Lake Tahoe, used most often by highly modified four wheel drive vehicles.

Just out of curiosity, I started a thread a while back, (Anybody done the Rubicon Trail on 2 Wheels?) asking if anyone had done it on two wheels. Many inmates responded with fond recollections of their experience, others with warnings and elaborate tales of terror.:yikes
At some point it became a sort of quest for me to do the trail on my KTM950Adventure. When I voiced this on the thread it started a whole new wave of Rubicon Tales of Terror.
The stories had the opposite effect on me and I became even more determined to tackle this trail.
Last weekend the opportunity came up. An inmate from DSRIDERS in Fresno PM'd me with an invitation. So after asking my boss for some time off in spite of the fact that I had too much work lined up and too little time to do it. And asking Mrs.Riceless if I could take off in spite of the fact that it was the weekend of our 20th wedding aniversery....THE RIDE WAS ON! :clap

I don't always ignore the good advice of others, as evidenced by the fact that I didn't ride The Mighty 950 to the trail. This is an unusual sight.

The drive is 500 miles one way, the trail is 12+/- miles, so I'll be in the truck for 1000+ miles so I can do a 12 mile trail ride. :loco

Since getting The Mighty 950 two years ago, I haven't driven this truck much.
It feels awkward, foreign, and unnatural. For all you Ironbutts out there that think I'm a wuss for truckin' it, well... I'm not a wuss! Mrs.Riceless made me take the truck. :shog Besides, it enabled me to get this terrible through-the-glass shot of what I think is Mt Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48.

    And shoot these pretty flowers

And boost my Karma a bit by pickin' up these broke down bikers.

They were climbing Monitor pass and had Mechanical issues.

Said they had been there for six hours and nobody would pick them up! Once crammed into the spacious and luxurious extended cab of the Tacoma, they seemed quite relieved.

As I dropped the boys off at their truck they assured me that because of my act of kindness I would "win my race this weekend for sure!" :rofl And so it was with a renewed sense of invincibility that I arrived at the trailhead.:pynd

Well I would have said "an ADV rider and a gentleman", but I think that's an oxymoron.

I've done the Rubi in a truck a few times. I could see the 950 being easier in some spots and a lot harder in others. I'm very curious to see how this goes.

After meeting my new Fresno Friends and hurriedly pitching the tent, I suited up to have a look at as much of the trail as I could squeeze in before dark. It was good, life was good, I slept well.

    Morning was beautiful.

Some of the group had camped elsewhere but it wasn't long before they rolled into the trailhead campsite.

Our group totaled six with the other bikes being between 510 and 650cc's.
One of the bikes might have been a bored out XR400 but I'm not sure. The recommended bike for this trail is a 160lb trials bike.
The bigger the group, the harder it is to get started. I prefer 6:00am starts but today would be closer to 9:00am.

This was a pretty darn nice place to wait.:nod

And soon enough, we were off! :clap

We had all sampled this slab the day before so we were all pretty comfortable at this point.

DSrider stuffing Montibank for the pass!

A Jeeper told me that most of the trail was paved. I was beginning to believe it.

    L. to R. Shazamdrz (oh yeah, he's on a 400), TR1200, Montibank, and The Mighty 950

This is Stevele5 on his monster DR650! (he told me to call it that for some unknown reason) He's the one that invited me to tag along on this Adventure Ride. Thanks Bro :wave

So the trail is a kick so far and Stevele5 & I are jammin' up the trail bangin' bars, roostin' mudpies, and beeping our horns at each other untill we reach a more substantial obstacle and Stevele5 notices the rest of the group isn't with us.

That is hysterical. Years ago we drug a noob through the Rubicon, told him it was graded and paved. He had a full meltdown at the springs. A full on screaming, helmet throwing, rock kicking meltdown.:rofl :rofl :rofl
