I love this stuff Joel. I think I might have been a mountain goat in another life. I need to go ride somewhere today, only so I can be disappointed. I hope the rain doesn’t impede your picture posting progress too much.

Don’t anyone watch this unless you want to ruin your image of the word Dolomite. Unfortunately, this old SNL character is what I think of every time Joel mentions the Dolomites.

it stopped raining early this morning, we rode to Tre Cime, about 80 miles rt and it was still wet but dried up quickly. we returned by 2pm thinking it will rain, but that didn't happen. the next 4 days looking sunny.

heard the local forests are closed, good we have the coastal highways.

    :lol2

we're planning to do the passes bordered by Merano/Bolzano, Cortina d' Ampezzo , Belluno and Trento. i don't mind riding to Stelvio again or a few Austrian passes depending on how much time we have. i know it's doable.

Did you consider riding the Mangart road (gpx track here) on your way from Slovenia into Italy?

One of the gems of Friuli can easily be reached from the Dolomites: Panoramica delle Vette (gpx track here).

I agree about PdV but be sure to check the cloud cover forecast. It's a tough slog up narrow, 2 way traffic roads. Last time there, it was completely socked in. Food at the rifugio at the peak was very good. Otherwise (IMO), not worth the detour.

In the last few weeks, I spent 10 days riding around Bormio (foot of Stelvio), Oberdrauburg, Austria (near Grossglockner) including 3 glorious days near Arabba (Cesa Padon is a fantastic dolimiti hotel with a moto garage). Lots of great riding out of Merano but that traffic from the end of the highway in Forst to north of Merano (to the Stelvio turnoff) can be 2-5 hours with the apple season traffic.

Mangart was in my mind when we were in Slovenia. if i stay here at the Alps longer, i would consider it. thanks for the track.

    thanks for the additional info.

    :thumb

the way it stands, we're here in Sexto until Saturday. we can do north of Merano on Wednesday or Thursday. today was Tre Cime, and this is tomorrow's route.

How are you liking the 650 in the mountains? When we were there with our X bikes I kept wishing I had the power of my 1200gs. The X was fine for most everything else cept the autobahn.

Enjoying your RR. Brings back lots of memories. And makes me miss our canceled 2020 Italy trip even more .

the 650 is enough for most of the riding. i accepted it's not for motorways and only times i need power is when passing slow cars and trucks. the speed limit which is low pretty much dictates how fast i can go.

the biggest benefit of being slow is i get to see more and smell the flowers. yes it would be nice to have a bigger bike and my Africa Twin with DCT fits the bill.

    thanks mk

"Rathaus" - I don't see your bike there. ;-) (Apologies to Mrs Merkel).

My bike was down as a RAT on a ferry ticket once, the person had misheard R80.

Beauty weather. Looks like it could be a somewhat chilly environment if it's overcast and raining. Do you see many people walking/backpacking?
