twice in the past, i traveled in various parts of Europe as a tourist, in a rental car, staying in hotels and visiting the big cities. that was fun but didn't really experienced the local flavor.

this time, i want to see the country side, small towns and the less popular cities. so, i set my garmin montana to avoid highways and toll roads. didn't do any planning and i don't have any specific routes. i even left my watch at home; just ride, enjoy the landscape until before the sun sets, then find a campground or hotel.

the whole idea is travel in foreign lands to convince myself to quit my job; that there are other and many places out there to fulfill my hunger for adventure.

in february of this year, i shipped my BMW G650X Country to Germany.

then in May, i got a notice that the bike "ms. merkel" arrived in Heidelberg at Stefan Knoft. soon, i booked a flight for August without even putting in a vacation request prior to getting an approval. i was determined to go and if my employer disapproves it, then i will resign. not what i really wanted, since i have a good paying job and only 2 miles from home. somehow, i keep on telling myself, money sitting in the bank won't take me anywhere; for sure later but i will be old and sick.

my first, fly on a Boeing 787....awesome experience

going back alone to my homebase without a gps will be impossible. the streets are not we're used to.

heidelberg is very nice and clean. it makes a good 1st destination if you ship your bike to stefan.

another small town and it was strangely quiet

    lots of roundabouts
    [IMG]

    big fields separate the towns

don't really know where i was going and what to expect, ended up here in Wurzburg
    [IMG]

i was lucky to get a room for half the price. No GPS and a dead phone, i walked in and inquired. inside it's all luxury so i told the receptionist that i have to go elsewhere and find a less $ hotel. she said, no worry and gave me the discount.

    2008.08.29 Wurzburg

next morning, i'm ready to get going
    [IMG]

this was the view outside my discounted room. on the far right is FĂĽrstenbaumuseum
    [IMG]

aside from the sights in the city, i wanted to get to that building on top of the hill
    [IMG]

    a castle nearby
    [IMG]

up on the hill, church goers need to have strong legs to hike up and go to mass. if me, will tell the priest that's my penance....:D
    [IMG]

Could not find the route, this is the closest I could get.

Some more pics of the city

thanks for chiming in and tagging along. i promised to post more nice pictures but hard to comment without good knowledge and going to google. feel free to label or comment on the pictures and descriptions.

the first 2 days of riding pretty much describes the title of this report. taking the backroads which has speed limits of 30 and 50 km/hour makes a long day. sometimes, ms. merkel and i are very happy to see 70 km/hour...:ricky

my fuel reserve light goes on at 110 miles....and by then it's almost 6-7 pm. unlike in the states, a 110 mile ride is pretty much 3-4 hours. i don't have a watch even look at the clock on my instrument cluster or GPS, which reminds me how farmers go about their daily schedule (sunrise to sunset). i also eat only 2x a day, big breakfast and dinner. not really i need to eat but anticipating what's on the next corner or town was enough to keep me energized....:happay

i noticed the german towns are more tolerant to motorcycles that they accommodate our parking needs.

left coburg after breakfast and to get to the next small city or town, i took the small roads with only little idea where it will take me...north

rain...a week ago, the temps were at mid to high 90F
