taking the public transport may be intimidating but it wasn't really that hard. it's fast and affordable. many Italians are very helpful in giving me directions. best of all, i like to see and interact with the ordinary people

I've always avoided Europe as I hate touristy destinations. When I did have to go for work a few times, I wasn't in touristy areas and didn't have time to explore. Your amazing pictures are making me think it's worth suffering through that! Time to plan for next summer

    Absolutely amazing Joel.

but sheeeeez... the amount of people everywhere. I've heard it's over-run with tourism but those pics are almost a turn-off. Grace doesn't agree and we're going anyway. :lol2

    Thanks for chiming in.

You better start working on your Italian. Rent a scooter and you guys will have a blast.

Our advantage is we get to ride many of the great roads in between big cities.

Same here but many of the places worth seeing attract a lot of people. My timing is not too bad, though starting to rain.

There are still plenty of places with less tourists. Also, start the day at 6 am and you’ll be far ahead.

Some of the best places in the area aren't on the tourist routes at all:

That being said, going to the Forum is an absolute must do. Yes there are a bunch of people there, but it's also one of the most important sites in the western world. (Your Forum ticket will also get you into the Colosseum without having to stand in line)

ok for us pizza lovers, this is Pizza Napolitana (anchovies) and believe me, the Neapolitans hate this pizza. they don't serve nor exist in their city. more of that later on my Napoli report.

hey, i see you've been hanging out with Lalo aka edventure...:rofl

it's contagious and next thing you know you'll be shipping your 990 over to Italy. you could always get a 1090R and keep it at home.

it's crazy especially when the weather is nice.

thanks Jeff. tired of looking at cool places on google earth from the sky and now PYYPP has landed.

Rome has so much to offer that one needs at least 4 days to explore. one that comes into mind is the Tiber River, which many of us believe is where the city was founded.

You're forgetting I'm a lowly pensioner. Plus, I really don't want a 1090R. When my wife and I do go to Italy, I may rent a bike for a few days. Maybe not. Less stuff to keep track of. I like to travel light.
