By the middle of March it is very unusual for the temperatures to get as low as -40°C/F, and by the end of March/first of April it may get above freezing during the day but down to -30°C/-22°F at night.

Something to be aware of - the warming temperatures of spring often bring late winter snowstorms. As you travel north that time of year you may pass through a band of such weather, but once you get into winter weather, it can be quite nice with clear skies.

I think the -40 to -50F temps in Glennallen have completely frozen the Geezer's brain cells as I don't remember him ever being tall, dark and handsome. However, it's possible my medications adversely impacted my vision. :huh I think I remember some of the adjectives I used a couple years ago when I was being nice so he would allow me to ride to Deadhorse with him: Charming, Intelligent, Gregarious, hmmm... maybe I did say Handsome (oops!), along with Intelligent, Charming, Gregarious, Distinguished... ending with Humble and Modest, of course. The platitudes worked as the Geezer allowed me to ride with him, although I didn't go "all the way" to Deadhorse with him. I went "all the way" with BeamerTwin, and it was an unforgettable experience, that's for sure! :evil That's the trip I made a sign to hold up during photos that said "My DR isn't ugly!!!"

Wow, that seems like an eternity ago. I've put a heck of a lot of miles on my bike since then. Yeehaw!

So... it sounds like we may be getting a visit from an Italian who doesn't wear skirts and likes to flirt? Ooohhh la la! :D I'll probably be up for a ride in April and I LOVE Italian food.

After almost 3 months riding from South America I finally made it to Vancouver and I am staying at the International Hostel. I will spend some time tomorrow visiting hardware stores and motorcycle stores to buy some stuff to deal with the weather from now on.

If someone is from here and would like to join me while I go gear hunting is more than welcome.

I don't have a phone but I will get notifications on this post if you ever reply.

Studs: If I buy them here should I mount them on right away or wait until the road it's actually iced?

Does anybody in Anchorage know where I can find a motorcycle metal crate?

    Thanks

The weather forecast for Whitehorse, Haines Junction, and Beaver Creek are all a little above freezing through the week so the roads should be mostly clear of snow and ice.

You may want to start a thread in the 'Canada' forum on here to hook up with others while you're in Vancouver.

Keep an eye out for Sjaak Lucassen heading down the other direction in a few days. He's in Beaver Creek right now. I've posted a pic below of his unique ride.

Good luck and have fun, Mark H.

Yeah, Sjaak and I spoke on skype about this idea of mine and of course he said it was totally possible, I just don't happen to have sponsors and money to buy all the expensive electric gear and tools he had, but I will manage with layers.

So far what you're saying is that I can get to Whitehorse no problems.... I wonder how's the road from there to Anchorage, my final destination.

    Thanks

Depends on the day. We've seen the road turn white around Eureka/Sheep Mtn in June then a couple days later 60-70f. We just got over 12" of snow here in Anchorage yesterday and 54" in Valdez! It's supposed to snow here in the Anchorage area again this coming weekend. No telling what's coming after that.

When I talked to Sjaak last night it was beginning to snow lightly in Beaver Cr.

Snow doesn't consernes me as long as the roads are kept clean. I guess alaska and canada are pretty good at this, aren't they?

Alaska's ok at it, Canada's fucking terrible. Your experience may vary.

It just snowed here in Fairbanks over the weekend, about 5", but the main roads are starting to get clear again (43 degrees on Friday!! :eek1 ). I'm hoping to get up and rolling about in the next two weeks, and I've seen the odd motorcyclist (not Sjaak) on the road in town.

Mmmmmm, I guess I'll just go north and see how far I get..... the problem now seems to be finding an agent that would ship the bike from Anchorage to Europe, although I think it's strange...
