Forest Service budget cuts. Works out for me since I use the BRP to commute to work, I used to se 2 rangers out every morning policing the commuter section here in Asheville, but I hardly ever see one anymore , once or twice a month at best.

Don't get me wrong, I love riding the Parkway in the mornings before the crowds, but my favorite times are when it's closed!

Most sections are closed due to tree and limb debris. It’s been very windy the past few weeks, especially from Craggy to Boone. Every few days the past two weeks there has been light snow too. It feels like one of those mild winters that just hangs on.

Forest service roads don't start opening back up until April. Then some that got hit harder than others can be months to years after that. Wash Creek was closed for a couple of years. I assume all of Yellow Gap will open in April.

I use the Parkway to commute as well. My section from Maggie to Waynesville gets a little less traffic and stays closed for awhile. The waterfall near Waynesville is stellar in the winter.

I rounded up another rider with a KTM 640, and it may be blasphemy but I just may put my 1290 on the trailer. I have 5 rallies coming up in the next 2 months so my tire budget is already taking a big hit...

I agree about giving it a bit to warm up, got a time?

I had the pleasure of riding down through this area and down BRP to Asheville last summer. Stayed at the Skyline Village Inn on the BRP just east of Little Switzerland - great folks and motorcycle-friendly (even have rentals).
However, some large sections of the BRP were under construction - some with the pavement torn up, and some loose gravel sections (yikes). Any locals know if the BRP is still under construction this year?
Would love to go again this summer and try to make it to Wheels Through Time.

^most of that work is done. It’s pretty good now. If the 2018 resurfacing from Mt Mitchell to Craggy Gardens and some southern sections are any indication of how it WILL be, It’ll be even better after a year.

I’m here part time (long weekends) so if you come down again, shoot me a PM and we can do some less traveled roads and some fire roads

Don't worry about it, I'm trucking too. It's a 60 mile round trip for me and the bike only gets about 150 per tank.

I hope to have the bike unloaded followed by a bag lunch at 11, then roll out when whoever shows is ready. I'm in no hurry - except to be back before it gets cold/dark. I'm not afraid of being that fair weather rider.

I’m out this time. I’ve been waffling the past couple days but I’m just going to wait until the bike is done. Have fun and post some pics please.

Something different this trip. I expected a smooth gravel road to the top, but it was a little more interesting, there were a few sections that were quite steep and rocky.

Was nice to meet you guys. Couldn't have asked for better riding conditions. Thank you, Mike, for leading the way and showing us all those cool spots!

I stuck to the pavement, it was a really nice day. Parkway was open North from 276, got a little 151 in.

Up here on the northern end of the BRP, snow and ice are the usual causes of closing. But not always. The northern end of the BRP was closed all winter into early spring 18-19 due to epic ice storm in late 2018 that left tons of trees and branches on the roadway. 18 months later, debris is still being cleared. Through riders, when you get up this way, look at the trees during the last 10 miles. In summer they will look like bushes due to new growth after all limbs were broken. At the exit at mp zero by the popcorn guy look at the leaning softwoods, bent permanently by a single violent storm. The most damaged have been removed, so it's subtler now. Never seen anything like it. One fun side effect was that wildlife took over the northern BRP and exploring on foot was like hiking in a wilderness, with views.
