couldn't find Hurricane Gap Rd on the list. If it's not, that's OK. It's a fun ride up to the State line from the Tenn side and then a fun ride back to Paint Creek.

But it really messes with my ability to make a nice loop

Isn't Hurricane Gap Rd in TN? That would be in a different NF than the link I posted. IIRC Cherokee NF.

It looks like it connects to Lookout Mtn Rd in NC.

I never knew that. I looked at Google maps and you are correct. :beer I just always called the whole thing Hurricane Gap Rd.
Thanks for pointing that out. The TN side has been open all along.Gate locked at the State line

but sadly it didn't make the list :dirtdog

The NC national forests seem to be eager to lock gates. A few years ago a major dirt rd in the Pisgah Forest was closed for many months, maybe a year. They never showed it on their pages. I called them and was informed they don't have to show closed roads if it is a temporary short term closure. :loco

Anyway Hurricane Gap looks interesting- don't think I ever stumbled across that one- thanks!:thumbup

Been digging a little more- that Lookout Mtn Rd is also know as Hurricane Gap Rd depending on whose map you look at.
I also found 2 different FR (forest rd) numbers depending on where you look- FR467 and FR3524, neither of which I can find in current online local USFS publications
At some point they started calling FR's FSR's....:fpalm
I did find an update that Hurricane Gap Rd FSR467 was closed due to a forest fire in ........ 2016. No further updates provided.

My head is spinning- nap time:lol3

EDIT- here is an official USFS map showing the road is OPEN all year.

    hurricane gap.JPG

The FSR # on the TN side is 31, also open all year.

No dice. Still closed and it's an absolute zoo around hot springs. A veritable parade of slow moving vehicles. Got the hell out of there.. 208, 212, 352.. Trying to get lost now :D

I can't let you WNC guys have all the fun.

Here are some pics from my ride on Tuesday. Hopped on the BRP at 460 and headed to the gravel road that takes you past Jennings Creek. Rode down to Buchanan and then up and over 43.

Gorgeous Shawn. Awesome you got out.

Relaxing ride today. Headed home on 19w. Saw a gate open at fs 278. Rode that for a spell to another closed gate. On my way back out I stopped for a break and saw another road with a broken gate. I pulled my map out and saw that it was lost cove rd! Awesome place to hike and explore if any of you haven't checked it out yet. Pretty interesting history.

When I explored it last time, I came in from another way. Next time I will hike in from that spot.

    Beautiful day. Couple of pics.

    Intriguing story about Lost Cove.

Digging through the maps I found that Lost Cove "Rd" where you found the broken gate. It is actually a trail now, TR196, probably used to be a road.
    Off FSR278 aka Flat Top??

Cool! It is really distressing to see the number of old forest service roads that have been closed. Some have been turned into trails, many just left to overgrow I suppose. Too bad we can't be riding them:(:

I've been over there on Shelton Laurel, the weather looked awesome, We will be up there week after next. Hurricane creek can't be reached form there exactly, you have to go Wesley Creek Rd.

I took a ride Friday (sorry no pics) up to the BRP via Curtis Creek Rd in Old Fort NC. I stopped at an overlook and was greeted by 3 fighter jets flying low across the mountains... It's always awesome to see them... Does anyone know what base they could fly from?

Nice pics and great story! Thanks for the share. Anything west of Marion in WNC is where my wife and I both love to relax. I'll keep Lost Cove in mind for our explorations.

Can you tell me what brand and size your boxes are on your AT? I need luggage racks, and am tempted to get the Tusk rack and boxes for my AT. Debating between the Medium and Large sized boxes.
