Hey @Rusty Rocket is Hurricane Gap the gated road near Hot Springs you asked about not too long ago? The gate at what my GPS called Rich Mountain was open today. My objective was to hustle 209 up and back but I had a little extra time :-).

I turned left knowing the sun was going down to my right but it dead ended at a look out tower.

If I would have went right through the open gate can that bring me to you?

If you make that right it takes you down towards Greenville

Yes, That's the gate. I'm on the other side of that mountain. It's my preferred route to Hot Springs. So glad it's open again. It makes for a nicer loop to go over that road.
    Thanks for the update.

I went back today. Man, what a pretty ride.

The gate was open on this so I went.

It ended up being a couple miles in and out, looked like this

It kept going but I didn’t, need someone to explore it with and knobs.

There were a couple of other “left turns” if you know what I mean, didn’t look like DR stuff but sure looked fun.

Turned left when I hit the pavement (thanks Russ!) and went through the campground I guess. I really liked it.

Not too far from the beginning of River Rd. I saw a left turn, according to my Scenic App it is called Polecat Holler. It was another fun little in and out.

Perfect ride for 2up with the wife next time, loved the scenery.

Did you stick the stock tank back on your DR or do you have two of them?

Same bike Win, just one DR650. When I decided what machine I wanted to explore all this gravel I had a set of goals I needed it to meet, a very diverse set of goals. I was able to put together one machine with enough relatively easy interchangeability. Now I’m just having fun, it’s a 2020 which is grey and I still have that tank. I’m sure you’ll see a picture of it in grey lol. I started with a ‘19 and really like the color scheme but I totaled it over the winter. I kept the cowl from that and just bought a take off ‘19 tank just because. It’s just dumb fun, and I love it. It’s the coolest bike I’ve ever owned.

I enjoy this thread but usually don't post much so I thought I'd change that. I did a ride this morning, I started up Sally Grove to I believe the Rd # is 90 at Wilson Creek, the road was in nice shape.
From there for a left on 90 to Roseboro and hit the MST trail, I believe the name of the Rd is Old School House IMG_20200606_104751301.jpg IMG_20200606_104751301.jpg
    IMG_20200606_104751301.jpg
I took that to edgemont,221 and 105. All roads were in nice shape. 105 was packed nice and no fresh gravel. It's like a dirt version of 181 that's just trying to make you twist the throttle and spin the tire! I also got a pic at the standard location IMG_20200606_115809797.jpg
I think now I may have to put the SM setup back on and hit 181 again!

I noticed yesterday the Cold Springs Creek Rd. near Max Patch is finally open and they graded Max Patch Rd. from there down to the pavement in NC. No fresh gravel thankfully.

I loaded up my wife and met up with @Rusty Rocket at the Hurricane Gap fire tower and he showed me some new to me stuff over there as well. I still need to sit down and figure out exactly what we did. Fun day of beautiful scenery, thanks Russ!

It was a last minute go or you know that you'd have gotten a text. I'm needing to do a lap up 80, roan, hit 107 and down 226A but I'll have to get the dirt tires off!

How were the conditions on School House? It’s been many years since I’ve rolled thru there. Wondering if it’s relatively big-bike friendly. Did they open Craig Creek Rd yet? Big washout from May-June last year shut it down.

Out and about looking for gravel... this is on Jenkin’s Creek Rd south of the Parkway. Found out Heintooga still closed... Yellow Gap/Wash Creek closed... Cathy’s Creek closed. Shockingly, Winding Stairs was open! Been almost 3 years.

Would be great if there was a list of non-pavment roads for Western NC with status of open or close and condition of the road, sort of like levels, to know if big bike or low experiance friendly. Also would be good if we can then update it on the current status.

Does anybody knows if this exists? If not, anybody know of this being done other places in the contry in which we can grb the idea from?

If not, my first approch would be google sheets with small list of people to modify it but yet anybody add comments.

Anybody else has any ideas on this? Seems like it would be very helpful.

I ride School House Road pretty regularly on my 1290, but there are sections that are pretty rugged, momentum is your friend…

Craig Creek Road is still closed, I was just up there a week ago.

I'm not a big bike guy, the 701 is as big of an adventure bike, if you can call it that, as I've ridden, But with decent tire I think you'd be fine and going down hill from Edgemont to Roseboro would be easier with a big bike and from Rosebore up. Or so I'd think.
