Thanks for the info on the cell service. I have AT&T and it was pretty spotty in some places. I’d like fly fish up in that area too. Looks like there’s a lot of creeks.

I had amazing weather two weeks ago so it figures the weather might go to crap.

Got out this morning and headed across the way to Cataloochee and into the gravel. Stopped in the park

I wanted some Martha so I hit FS288. Coming up to 40

Freshly groomed 288 and freshly groomed beginning of Brown Gap, still smelled like fresh dirt. I passed the groomer on 288. Rode around Martha.

Took Green Corner to Waterville. I never went straight up Tobes Creek before so I figured I’d see where it ends up. Pleasant surprise, 32.

Jammed that back to Big Creek and then turned left at what doesn’t show up on most maps and Scenic called FS288 (it’s not) I just call it baby heads. The tree crew told me about the surge tower rd. so I checked that out.

I’ve seen it from the real 288 but never noticed this road off of baby heads. They used a bunch of river rock over the mud at some point, hence babyheads. It’s a difficult deal uphill with the mud and wet rock but fun.

After that I headed to Hurricane Creek downhill. I heard thunder when I hit Max Patch Rd. I figured after the storms the past 3 or 4 days now I’d better head home. They’ve been some doozies.

Got soaked about a mile from home, felt great.

I don’t think ATT works up there, I know it didn’t a few yrs ago.

Hey @PineyMountainRacing does Caney Fork come out anywhere? I ran it up to a rickety bridge to my right and steep and loose to the left and turned around with 50/50 tires. I’m curious about where both ways go, the highest point in the Parkway is straight up I noticed that on maps.

I know an inmate that lives up Caney Crk, I actually tried to get ahold of him this trip. He and I rode our Urals up Caney and Moses several years ago. IIRC Moses Crk comes out on the back side of Wayahutta OHV area. We were stopped by a gate on Caney so we parked the rigs and walked a mile or so, I’m pretty sure we were getting close to the Parkway. But I remember he said it gets gnarly the further up you go.

I plan to explore those roads again with or without him this fall. Probably a small bike with knobs, not an 1100 with street tires :lol3 I’ll reach out to him again next trip up, I’ll let you know what he says about conditions. It would be nice to do it with another rider, not solo,

Correct that many maps are wrong > That baby head rd is actually FR289. AKA Old Buzzard Roost. That road up to the surge tank is FR3520 AKA Flat Branch. 288 289.JPG

Thanks Al, does yours show Flat Branch continuing back to 289 being called Sandy John Ridge FS Road?

yeah its a little odd- it shows the portion actually in the US Forest as FR3520A Sandy John Ridge Rd then at the forest boundary it changes to Sandy John Ridge FS Rd- which I assume is a county road (since it doesn't have a FS number), then it changes names again to Mack Caldwell Rd which connects to Mt Sterling Rd.

Below is the "official USFS" map- is that how it actually is? FR3520A.JPG

Thanks, I want to find that now. The only turns off of Flat Branch I saw looked illegal, so maybe one is legal but gnarly.

I looked at the aerials and there are houses in there- I know what you mean- I've seen dirt roads that looked legit and suddenly you are in someone's back yard with dogs chasing you:lol3

@AlH it ended up being a chihuahua and thankfully it didn’t chase. Mack Caldwell road bangs into a mountain about 1/2 mile in and ends at the dogs house lol.

I found some really really nice back there pavement yesterday. I was hoping some of it was going to be gravel when I laid It out but that wasn’t to be. I’ve been wanting to make my way to Douglas Lake in TN. I jammed 40 to Big Creek for time and then started with my new addiction, TN 32. I can’t get enough of this road! Ran that until it ends at 321 and took a left on 321 towards Gatlinburg. This 4 or 5 miles was the only boring part and it’s a short section. It does go by Cosby, which is pretty.

Hung a right on Rocky Flats, what a great road! Flowy, nice pave, and tree cover liken to a tunnel which was great on this hot day. Rocky Flats ended at Jones Cove where I hung a left for a mile or so before turning right on Camp Hollow Road. Paved but skinny like a good gravel road, nice pave again. Camp Hollow ends at Wilhite Road where I again turned left for about a mile. I turned right on Alpine Drive, this was real nice. Steep at times, real curvy, nice pave climbs steeply up and over eventually becoming Blowing Cave Rd.

I passed Forbidden Caverns which I’ll explore eventually and this old Blowing Cave Mill.

Blowing Cave Rd. ends at 411 close to the lake. Yesterday I just kept straight until I hit the water, now I can find boat rentals and restaurants to explore eventually.

So Rocky Flats, Camp Hollow, and Alpine are all keepers for me, check them out if you’re in that area.

I rode Alpine Dr back in 2015 in an organized event. Been trying to figure out where it's located since moving here 3 years ago. My first thought about it was, " I would've liked to watch the guy who drove the roller when they paved that"

I shit you not they were paving the steepest part on the way up yesterday. It was interesting to see the roller, I wondered how the driver felt but figured he was used to it.
