Man I love finding or re-discovering roads. There is a road not too far from me that I have ridden in years past and while one Side has good pavement the other side does (did) not. I will ride poor roads on the dual sport but don’t care to on the street bikes.

Last week I saw the other end was still the same but Sunday I decided to ride it again anyway since I had no ride plan and no where to be. As I rode past the halfway point the road had been resurfaced, just not all the way to the other end. It stopped short about one mile. It’s not a “county” thing either which they like to do in NC.

It’s still a tight road, but when you don’t have to worry about where the next hidden pile of chad is or patched pavement seams when you’re tipping the bike in it just makes for a more enjoyable ride.

Exploring new roads is something I like to do, and now have more time to wander. It’s shaping up to be an interesting Fall.

@Flatroads and I did 150 miles today, ran across Soco over to Max Patch. It was almost the “No Wallet No Worry” tour but I remembered I’d forgot before we got too hot and heavy into it. Ran Rattlesnake Gap to the end, checked out Wolf Crk falls, and rode to the state line gate at Upper Shut In. Then at Rattlesnake Gap we took the road that goes on the north side of Round Mtn, which was muddy as snot and no place for a KLR with 90/10 tires. But fun anyway :lol3 Then back down MP to Fines Creek to 209 and into Waynesville for a nice Italian dinner at Bocellis. Back to Sylva, hot showers and trying to make an executive decision about where to go tomorrow. TBH I’d be OK if we didn’t ride in any mud for the next day or so LOL. And this was after spending 12 hours on the bikes getting here yesterday. It was def a beautiful day today!

Great pics! I think @justBert and I passed you guys in Maggie by J Creek around 11:40 lol. We did mostly road riding up Crabtree Mountain, 215 to Charleys Creek and grabbed a tag on Wolf Mountain.

Does the greasy track that goes by the big rock exit? I was solo with the wrong tires so I turned back a ways in and haven’t gone back, that was a few months ago. It sucks about that gate some maps show it going through but I found out the hard way. I would love to use Upper Shut In in some loops.

that’s pretty funny, I wondered if that was you :D I didn’t notice the KTM though?

we had originally planned (I even drew out my scribbled map LOL) to hike up Max Patch and then go down 209 and pick up Baltimore Branch and play around over by Marshall, then end up in Waynesville for dinner. Lot of folks at MP and really didn’t want to carry jackets and tank bags, etc. Or leave stuff in the bikes, so we kept riding.

maybe head up 209 tomorrow, go thru Hot Springs and do the Lonesome Mtn / Big Laurel / Grape Vine loop. Maybe end up in Marshall or Mars.

What time might you be riding? I have to get a ‘75 Shovelhead ready for this shindig but it shouldn’t take too long and I’ll start early if you guys would have a third wheel?

I’ll PM you my cell, just shoot me a text when you’re up in the AM. Looks like another good weather day so we won’t be in a hurry. We got on the road pretty early Sunday to make the ride up, it felt good to fart around this morning and drink coffee.

By "big rock" do you mean Horseshoe Rock on Wolf Mtn Rd?
If you do -then yes that road comes out on Charlies Creek Rd on one end and Tanasee Creek Rd on the other.

To confuse things there is a FS road (4663C) named Wolf Mountain and there is a county road named Wolf Mountain. They are about 5 miles apart:hmmmmmand both come off Charlies Creek!

last couple days have been hectic for the Florida boys, out riding in the AM and trying to beat the storms home. Tuesday we met up with @JRowland and ran up 209 then over to Big Laurel (the other Big Laurel) and did the mandatory Spillcorn tour. Played around over there and ended up in Mars for dinner. We did wear masks and sat 6 ft apart, or more, from the other diners. Gassed up and came back across Baileys Branch over to Trust, down 209 and home safely. Got a little wet on the east side of Sylva but it was dry at the house so got the bike up the drive without any drama :muutt

yesterday @Flatroads and I had a narrow window with the weather. Took the 790 and KLR up Conleys Creek and over the original Big Laurel. The sky started looking dark so we skidaddled up 28 towards home only to get behind a white Tahoe with Florida tags that was using both lanes to drive at the posted speed limit of 35. Although @Flatroads was on his ass the entire way I don’t think the cage even knew we were back there. Seriously, maybe the KTM needs a louder pipe. But at least he sped up, sometimes exceeding the speed limit, on the straights. So there is that. Hit a narrow section of rain on the 4 lane around Bryson, then dry until we got the bikes under my carport and the monsoons began.

not many pics as I was spending too much time watching the sky

Today we ran over to Cherokee and rode the BRP up to Water Rock, then off at Balsam. Toyed with the idea of going down 441 and hopping back on 28, but the rain was com8ng so we bailed. Heavy rain started 5 minutes after we pulled in at the house.

It was great riding with you and @Flatroads! Your asshat driver is something I run into often around here. Hold you up like ridiculously in the curves and then tries to drag race you in the passing opportunities. It’s like just let me go man, you’ll never see me again I promise :lol3

Despite the occasional rolling roadblock, it was still the best riding week I can remember. Thanks to @PineyMountainRacing for being my host and tour guide all week.

Nice. Conley's Creek Road is a great time. I also found the restaurant attached to Lazy Hiker Brewing in Sylva to be fantasic. I stopped by there a few times.

Enjoyed a rainy morning this past Saturday. Actually made for about perfect riding conditions on the dirt roads. Those big bimmers kept getting in the way of the purdy orange bike in the pics. :lol3

Good pics @CheapB, nah that grass wasn't slippery. We gotta get ol' silver suit or tin man on here so'st he can play too.

I think you left out a pretty good picture from a tag game though.

Got out with @justBert for an awesome day. We started at Needmore Rd. and ran part of the SM500 red. Needmore, Tellico Rd, Otter Creek, FS711, and Rainbow Springs Rd. were all beautiful. The scenery was stunning and the riding was fun.

After some discussions with @PineyMountainRacing and @knybanjo recently I wanted to go back to Caney Fork Rd. and poke around. We went to the end and where I left off last time at the rickety bridge.

Older pics from where I chickened out last time, which in hindsight was a smart move.

We crossed the bridge and checked out both tracks on the other side. It was rocky and slimy and the middle of the tracks was raised up and deep grass which kind of stuck you in a rocky rut. It was challenging for me but I was having a blast, I think Bert was too. The first one climbed up a ways, got real muddy and just ended. The second one was similar except we were heading right for the Blue Ridge Parkway near the highest point.

Bert scoping the scene around the bend

I was hoping it would connect but nope, I mean it does but not for us.

    3E6D5490-ECF6-4E92-A389-CDFD5B1D10B4.jpeg

We left two tracks up there for another day. Next up was Rough Butt, it really looks like someone’s property and we almost turned around but I spotted a rocky path and sure enough that was it. There was a deep and fast moving stream crossing and it was late in the afternoon. We both decided to save it and the rest for next time. Lots left to sniff out.
