at the top of Conleys Crk (just past Big Laurel) I took the hard left on ? FS70 and rode up to the gate for the towers and look out, and it was OPEN. Went on back and the transmitters were being serviced, a couple large cranes blocking the road but I told the workers I’d park my bike and walk back to the tower

I can see these towers and the look out from my front porch in Whittier, and on a clear day I can make out my pasture from the tower. Back in the day I’d call my neighbor from up there and he’d run out with a white blanket and wave it around in the air, with binoculars I could see him doing it it. Now 20 yrs later, and early cataracts, it wasn’t happening. Also no Verizon signal today, despite standing 100 yards from their humongous antenna :baldy

the old roadbed that connected to Greens Creek Rd that runs to 441 / Franklin. Before my time it was a “shortcut” over the mountain

more side roads, a lot of dead ends today.

on down to 28 and stopped at the BP in Old Cowee for a drink and gas. They were out of Premium and only had 87. Had a brain fart and didn’t add any fuel at all, in my mind I was certain I carried 3 gallons in the tank. Finished my water and headed up 28 and then the 4 lane back to Whittier. Bought fuel around Bryson City, took 1.8. Google has now informed me the bike has a 2.1 gallon tank :muutt I’ve gotten spoiled riding bikes that carry 6-8 gallons, but I have to say the gravel was a lot of fun on a smaller bike today.

Nice pics... looks like a fun ride. If dry, would Dick’s Creek be big bike friendly?

I bet driving that crane up there was interesting.

Man, you picked a good week weather wise (so far)! That was cool that the tower gate was open for you, I wondered what was back there. This pic ^^^ did that dead end? It looked like it did on the map last time I was there and I rode a little part of the way down. When I was coming down Dick's Creek there was a gate on my left where it looked on the map like that road went but I never found out for myself. Thanks as usual, hand drawn map on a napkin to explain would be swell :-)

i went up Dick’s from the 4 lane (74), when I got to the spot where you make a hard left and go up to the 4-way intersection and start down Washington Crk, I kept going straight. Years ago I followed that forever in my Jeep but it got more muddy and narrow and the sun was setting so I got turned around. Yesterday I wanted to follow it to the end but it is now gated about 2 miles from the intersection of Wash Creek with Dicks, but there is a side road that goes down right when you get to the gate, that is normally gated. Yesterday the gate was “open” (pulled out of the ground actually) so I followed it down for awhile. There are several intersections as you go, I wasn’t happy with the way the bike was running and didn’t have any tools, tubes, compressor or water so turned around after a few miles. I’m back in a couple weeks with nothing to do but ride; so I’ll give you a shout and see if you want to go explore. I want to re-explore the road that takes off to the east up the ridge from the “4 way” but I need better tires I’m pretty sure. Speaking of which, what are you using on your DR?

Yep that's the one, pulled out gate. I'm always down to explore, that's my favorite! I've got some I want to explore over on the reservation as well so we can for sure make a day of it. Currently I'm running a Pirelli Scorpion Rally front and a Dunlop D606 rear and I'm super happy, wish they lasted longer but that's a very minor gripe.

Yellow Gap status from forest service email:
Unfortunately 1206 (Yellow Gap Road) is closed from 476 to North Mills River due to damage from a landslide. We are awaiting engineers to assess the damage and propose possible solutions, so we are unsure when it will be able to be reopened.
475B (Headwaters Road) is closed from 225 (Upper Cove Creek Road) down to 475 (Davidson River Road), although that should be fixed either this week or next.

I am SO looking forward to hot weather so I'm not layered in so much gear that it restricts my movements, and so cold that I start having issues with the controls.

Not me, I hate the hot weather here. We have an acronym at my house THTM.

    Too hot to motorcycle.

As in, "Honey are you taking the bike to work today?"

    "Nah, THTM."

I'd rather it be 95 than 46. Even with heated gear on maximum, after three hours of riding in the mid 40s I get cold to the bone and start making mistakes. It literally cannot be hot enough for me, I'm ALWAYS cold. 105 in the shade? Sounds like a good day to ride.

Wow, I've stayed there up to a week each of the last few years, but it looks like the prices doubled with the new owners! Looks like time to find a new campground. It was a nice place, but I'm a cheap SOB.

took a break from packing up last nite and ran over to the Cold Springs Rd / Fontana Lake area. Had to be back by 6 as the neighbors were cooking me dinner. Pulled into their drive at 5:59 :lol3

I think this was Buckner Branch Rd

back in FL after 11 hrs in the truck, long day. Hot and humid here but I gotta admit, I’m enjoying my 400 Mbs download / upload speed LOL. I usually have <1 to maybe 4-5 on a good day up there :-(

I hear ya about being cold, but I like the extra clothes I have on in cold weather to absorb crash impact

Cherohala Mountains Trails Campground is about 5 miles from Tellico Plains and is one of the best of the campgrounds IMO. I stayed at Hunts Lodge once because CMTC was closed. I liked it but haven't stayed there again because CMTC is just better. The owner of CMTC rides a DRZ400 and is a super nice and helpful guy. It's not a motorcycle only campground but most of the people staying there tend to be on motorcycles. Last year it was around $12 per night for tent camping.

    Edit: https://cmtrails.com/

$10.50 + tax for tent camping.
