Prob a lot of experience in this thread on the type of NF road gravel common to NC. What do you guys recommend for tires that excel in that specific type of gravel road. Would be going on a Transalp....

The 16/17 would be possible for me, can't do the 30th, but the 31st might work

Is anyone familiar with the plot balsam area? It looked like you could get to yellow face mt via plot balsam road. I ended up way up in some sketch mud and rock gardens and turned around. Up past hornbuckle creek water falls.

The road that loops to the west is plot balsam road but there was a semi private looking gate that was open but had some HOA type residents only sign so I tried the pink route in the attached pic. Which wasn’t actually anything in Gaia probably for a reason.

I looked at a few houses in there a few years ago. I remember some sketchy, but it was the resident type :lol3 I never took the DR back there, I just assumed it was all houses.

There’s a few houses closer to 19 but it gets thinner they way I went.

Some of you expert level dudes should check out the end of the pink track and try to get up that trail. Gaia map shows it connecting.

I'm not expert level but I've been looking at satellite images and my curiousity is piqued. The land owners are a mix of private, gov't, Indian, and corporate and it's all chunked up. But there are trails and it's close.

small world, or small mountains, I hiked thru there a few weeks ago

I was trying to get to Sylva / Pinnacle Park but the ascent up Black Mtn was too steep for my little Shelby (yellow Lab in my avatar). I’m coming back in a couple weeks to try it sans puppy dog

Craig is that the Mountain to Sea trail that follows that ridge line? I saw it on one of my maps but didn’t track it, just noticed it ran through there.

MST runs from Clingmans Dome to the Outer Banks, you will be on a section of it when you hike from WaterRock Knob Parking Lot to WaterRock Knob and Browning Knob. This is the hike I was trying to do, it starts right across from the entrance to WRK

    https://www.hikingupward.com/NCSP/BlackrockMountainThePinnacle/

I hiked from Sylva to Pinnacle Point earlier this Spring with Shelby, I’ve wanted to hike from Sylva to WaterRock Knob but need someone to pick me up or shuttle a vehicle if I’m hiking alone. I started towards Black Rock a few years ago in the winter, but it got too cold, even with the exertion of walking.

Life goal is to hike the entire MST. Not thru-hike but by section. Hope to start next spring.

We like to hike part of the MST over by the highest point on the Parkway. It’s a nice trail.

That road makes more sense on the USGS topo than the base gaia map which I've found pretty good normally. See attached.

Here’s how Jackson County has it mapped, pretty close to your track. The land below and to the right of where they show the road ending is US Forest Service, to the left is an LLC and to the left of them a trust.

@SwampyDeadHead thanks for getting me out of the craft festival in Waynesville :lol3 You had me at good waterfalls, and they are. There were some beautiful streams to ride beside up and down the mountains in that area :thumb

Started with Mash Stomp, I knew it was gonna be wet.

The signs said this was Green Mountain

    1E29856E-52F8-4CEC-BE88-A8D328BFB1FA.jpeg

Nice and rocky and unmaintained, that machine made it a muddy mess too but it was fun. I was just creeping around. This was my first sketchy dead end, it doesn’t end but it did for me. 9 out of 10 times I’d make this no issue but I was by myself and it was only getting rougher as I went. Next time.

    2AC72920-F5F9-4701-8728-1501FFCFBEEE.jpeg

I turned around and followed the right and according to the sign Plott Balsam.

    FAB3AB36-5EE8-4D84-B29A-A284133342E0.jpeg

This was my second sketchy dead end that wasn’t but was for me, again. Muddy log, the ground was soft and I had descended down a good ways already on the mud/leaf/rock trail and knew getting back up was gonna be not easy. This needed commitment and I didn’t have it by myself.

    59B43574-45E0-40EB-8EF3-279148B1CBD9.jpeg

As I went back up out of there I followed a left on what the sign said was Reservation Rd. I was thinking I could back door that lower muddy log, the Green Mountain dead end was up high, this stuff was in a valley.
