Big time Civil War enthusiast here, but by no means a professional.
How many of those 8k died of their wounds, or disease, that would have spared them otherwise? No expert here, but I'll wager it was way more than 8k.

It was a stupid and unnecessary necessary war. I live in VA and to a degree we're still fighting it so many years later., even on adv.com. Original sins die hard, and the minds of the closed minded living will not be changed.

My friend Michael that I posted about above is on the road to recovery and still a couple months out from riding. In the mean time I've been keeping my radar open for a replacement of his beloved Burger 200 and I found one in Houston, TX with only 375 miles on her for a steal of a price. That's the good news, the bad news is he's in no condition to travel for a fly and ride let alone a trailer drive to and from The Keys to Houston.

So I'm stewing on the the idea of helping him out with the idea that I have cabin fever here in VA as it is still a tad sketchy weather here. Hmmm.... so I called him up and many texts later we decided I'll fly out one way to Houston, ride it to the Keys, toss him the keys, catch a plane back to the Old Dominion! What could go wrong?

    Conchshooter's new steed!

This will not be a stop and smell the roses tour but a delivery tour with some points of interest pictures. Talk about deja vu, a third of the route is almost the same route I took when I purchased my 946. Here's roughly the route I have planned as best I can as I have 24 hours to do my job, prep and pack, buy tickets, etc., etc. I'll stop in Louisiana to visit some friends and the work my way down the left coast of FL and eventually to Key West. I hope Mother Nature cuts me some slack on this trip as she has pounded me on the last couple. I'll post my adventure (not much of one) here with many pics and a glympse of my location should you have any interest in where I'm at on this journey.

My plane leaves Richmond at 6 AM tomorrow morning so I'll be up and headed to the airport at 4 Am, here we go another redeye...

I am in Houston and prepping the bike with my nav. Here's a pic of my jury rigged setup. The weather bad with heavy rain and visibility is bad.

I'm going to stop in Scott, LA and call it a day. I've been going hard since 2:30 this morning. About another 32 miles to go for the day. If I have the energy I'll do a proper write up for the day.

Okay, here's the quick down and dirty of the day.

I was worry about hooking up my nav so I ordered a RAM ball mirror stem mount, Amazon didn't get it to me in time. Boooo! So this is what I have towork with and the Burger's handlebar is cladded.

I'm up at 2:30 am and out the door to the airport at 3 am and on the plane at 5:30 am. I got hit with a check in fee for one of my bags for $30 as this time they wouldn't let me wear it as a hat. lol
    [IMG]

Gas, quick mart and casino in LA. Swing!

Get to Houston and catch a cab to the dealership, as you can see it's pouring and very foggy out. Yay!

By the time I get to the dealership the rain had let off a tad. Man, what nice dealership!

I hustle up into the dressing room and don the rain gear hand head out to look the scoot over. The salesman was taking in the back to fill it with gas. Nice!

I brought a thick strip of rubber and wrapped it around the mirror stem and used the handlebar clamp. It worked like a champ!

Once I got on the road the bike started smoking bad. I pulled over 1 block away and they overfilled the oil. So I Googled a wally world and off I went in a cloud of smoke. I purchased a turkey baster and sucked enough oil out into a water bottle and fired her up, she's all good now. Found the nearest gas station to drop the used oil off to recycle and off I went into the fog and the rain.

No real scenic pics but here are a few when I would stop to check the bike
    [IMG]

I had forgotten to eat and I was getting wet in the crotch and front of my shirt so I pulled over into a Mc'Ds. Ummm... I left my fly open and the pooling water was pouring into my crotch and wicking up my shirt. Put that on my list of things I wish I never did.

Just got to the hotel and will get showered up and off to find some boudin and craklins! Woohoo! @cdwise oh yee of little faith!

Umm, @conchscooter scoot is getting broken in quick!

    Left to go...

And my weaksauce numbers for the day.

Here's the scene this morning with thunderstorms on the way, I'm packing up to get out of here and hopefully outrun the bad weather.

I remember watching Glympse when Eric was riding his Vespa home from Texas. He was hitting 70 on his 155cc Vespa. I think maybe he's drafting 18 wheelers or something:dunno

In Mississippi woohoo! Look hard that's blue sky you see. Stooped for gas, food and to give my boney arse a break. Making a run for the border or bathroom, which ever comes first ;) 20190227_123400.jpg 20190227_124809.jpg

Wow! What a day and I have lots to share...

I wake up after a solid 8 hours rest to this. Soggy, threatening thunderstorms, rain, the usual.

I start getting on it to outrun whatever Mother Nature had in store for me blast down I10. Hands down I10 is the most dangerous road I have ever ridden on in my life twice. Every stop I made folks ask during chit chat to be careful on I 10 as they drive like maniac. They're 100% correct...

I have a long day ahead of me and want to get a full bite out the miles I need to much. The weather was cool and a bit cold so I had my liners in and was quite comfortable buzzing down the road.

    Woohoo Mississippi!

I wanted to stop for the Alabama pic but there was no shoulder to pull over. I pulled off the road and did some ADVing to get this pic. hehe
    [IMG]\

One stop for gas was at Tater's in AL. Yep, I'm in the south, my peoples.

One of the very few scenic pic was where the U.S.S. Alabama is stored. I wish I had the time to visit...

    The mighty Alabama!

I finished my trip to day making it to Pensacola FL. (there's a welcome to FL sign in this pic on the left, I wanted to get the jet in the pic)

I have been mulling over to share an incident with folks but after further thought I decided I should as kind of a PSA. At one gas stop I pulled off I was the only person at the pump. I keep my radar going when I'm on the bike or off for stops. I saw someone approaching me in a creeper kind of way and my spidy sense started tingling.

The gent creeps up from my backside and gets within 10' so I turn around and ask, "do we have a problem?"
He says no, "I just wanted to ask you if you have a few dollars to spare?"
I say, "no, have a nice day."
He says, "then I'll just take your wallet." (pulls out a knife)
I say, "son, don't do this as it's not going to go well."

As fast as I can I cracked him with the crown of my helmet I'm still wearing and down he goes in a heap and starting to leak from his face. I took the knife he dropped and put it against the curb and stomped on it and broke it in half. Hopped on the Burger and got the hell out of there.

I found another gas station to refuel and got back on the road. The adrenaline was flowing in me and I was shaking like a leaf for 20 minutes. Why do I mention this? Because I feel it is a PSA (public service announcement) to folks who travel on the road alone. Situational awareness is paramount so keep your eyes open wherever you pull into on the road and protect yourself at all times.

No, I'm not proud of what I have done nor am I ashamed. I felt I was in harms way swiftly dealt with it. In retrospect did I handle the situation appropriately? idk... If I had a chance to just leave I would have but in this case I didn't. No, I wasn't going to detain him and call 911 as we all know how this would go down, he attacked me and there I am defending myself. So let your conscience be your guide...

    Stats for the day.

789 miles to go and 405 miles today.

I have a few equipment failures that I'll write about later as I'm too tired tonight. I will share some more of this leg of my journey when I get more time to digest it. I want to thank all the good folks that have reached out to me via PMs, texts, and posts offering their homes, or a hot meal. I'm trying meet with a few that are somewhat on my journey but the goal is to get conchshooter his bike without a mark on it in a timely manner and get home back to my life.

    Peace,

    Eric
